Maps can be used beyond location finding. Google My Maps and Google Earth are tools that allow creators to add layers of images, text, data, and path making in order to provide information about a place or event.
When learners build an interactive map through Google map tools or other tools, they are communicating through images and text. They practice creativity as they select related data and images to accompany a location or event. They engage in critical thinking as they identify relevant and irrelevant information.
You might assign map creation when...
you want students to explore the components of regions, habitats, landforms, etc.
you want students to demonstrate an understanding of a sequence of events and/or relevant facts related to events.
you want to enhance or replace an assignment that asks students to show their knowledge of a sequence of events or their recognition of particular geographic features.
