Remember, having students create is preferable to having them simply consume learning. The curation of a portfolio is an avenue for them to create a story about their learning.
Portfolios are collections of self-chosen samples of student work that:
allow students to see and track growth over time.
celebrate the learning process.
highlight unique learning strengths.
provide an authentic audience.
Portfolios can be physical collections of samples like an artist would curate. They can also be digital. Digital portfolios are more accessible to the owner and others who might view the collection. They can be composed of photographs of physical items alongside digital items.
Portfolios can be a means for reinforcing student ownership because students are communicating their learning, determining where they are in the learning process, and evaluating and reflecting upon their learning.
You might implement a portfolio when...
you want students to recognize their progress towards mastery.
you want students to share their learning with others.
you want to enhance or replace an assessment opportunity where the teacher is the primary assessor.
