Everyone needs a tutorial from time to time. It may be aimed at showing the proper way to whisk an egg, or it may be show how to calculate mass in a chemical reaction.
Learning by teaching is a pedagogical practice that benefits both the giver and the recipient. When a person makes a tutorial, they must understand the topic in depth in order to share the pertinent information and steps with others.
When students are given the opportunity to break a task or information down into digestible bits and then package those bits so that others can digest them easily, they are gaining experience with social knowledge sharing and the tools that make it possible. Those experiences help students prepare for the tasks and tools they'll encounter in college or their careers.
You might assign the creation of a tutorial when...
you want students to practice sequential writing.
you want students to practice expository writing.
you want to cause students to understand content at t deeper level.
you want students to combine images and language to represent ideas.
you want students to experience modern presentation applications.
