Number Sense Routines

Suggested Grade Level: PK-12

Number sense routines tap into every child's innate sense of number providing daily experiences that develop and nourish number sense. They facilitate students' application for number sense in a variety of situations and contexts. Routines serve as quick 5-15 minute daily number sense experiences; everyday interactions with numbers, amounts, patterns and relationships. With strong number sense, children become more apt to attempt problems and make sense of mathematics. It is the key to understanding all math.

Number talks

Number Talks are a 5-15 minute conversation around purposefully crafted computational problems. Students are asked to communicate their thinking when presenting and justifying solutions to problems they solve mentally. Number Talks lead to the development of more accurate, efficient, and flexible strategies.
