Diagnostic assessment is an integral component of the teaching and learning process. Universal screening accomplishes two important tasks for educators as they work to ensure that learning is happening at the highest levels for all children:
Evaluate the effectiveness of Tier 1 universal instruction
Provide educators with data that helps to identify students who may be “at risk” for poor achievement or progress in reading. The information obtained from the universal screener is general and does not outline the specific instructional needs of a student.
For students who score below benchmark on the universal screener, it is necessary to administer diagnostic assessments to highlight strengths and determine the specific skills in which a student should receive instruction. The data from the diagnostic assessments informs the teacher of the gaps that need to be filled. Examples of diagnostic assessments include: phonological awareness screeners; phonics screeners/surveys; spelling inventories/screeners; fluency screeners.
