Some colleges offer programs that provide travel funds for students who are unable to visit their campuses due to financial constraints. Students who apply and are accepted participate in a visiting weekend on the college campus at little to no cost. Most schools will open up these programs specifically for underrepresented groups to glimpse life on their campuses while hopefully removing cost as a barrier to access. Because of COVID, many schools this year are hosting virtual fly-in's.
The application requirements vary by school. Usually you need to send in a transcript, your ACT scores, and write at least one short essay.
Not necessarily. However, being accepted to a Fly-In Program means that the school’s admissions office is interested in you. Usually you’ll meet admissions officers when you attend the Fly-In, even if it is virtual, which could help your application.
Making a trip, virtual or in-person, to a college campus is one of the best ways to determine if you want to apply to a school. You’ll be able to picture what your life could look like as a student and learn the ins and outs of student life.
The special benefit of visiting a campus through a fly-in program is that you experience college life with other peers accepted into the program. Due to the special programming prepared for you and the cohort of students selected for the fly-in program, you’ll get an insider’s perspective of the college—even more so than visiting during standard college visitation weekends! It’s a great opportunity to connect with students who are seriously considering applying to the institution and potentially meet your future classmates.
No, but we can always check if there is a specific school you’re hoping to visit. They just might have a program! Check in with your counselor!
Below is a search tool for a select list of schools that are offering virtual and/or in person fly-in programs. This is not a complete list! If you are interested in attending a fly-in at a school not listed, reach out to your counselor and they will help you check if that school hosts a program. Please let your counselor know if you're interested in applying to a fly-in program.
