Students in Fifth class researched various types of rockets then built a simple rocket to predict and test how far it could travel. Next they adjusted the design, adding fins and pointing the tip and again predicted and tested. Further adjustments were made as necessary. Successful design features were identified alongside any design flaws.
scratch!
Children in Fourth Class used scratch for coding for Engineers week. We worked in pairs and we each had a different scenario and we had to enter correct codes to make our sprites do what was asked.
Construction
First Class recently covered 3-D shapes in maths and so they used cocktail sticks and marshmallows to construct different shapes
Straw Rockets
First Class made straw rockets and measured the distance the rockets travelled.
STEM Challenge
Groups of pupils were given 4 possible STEM challenges, building a boat, plane, bridge or rocket. They designed it in groups and gathered equipment required, constructed their design and tested it. They then adjusted design if necessary.
chemical engineers!
Children in Senior Infants discussed the different types of engineering. They became ‘chemical engineers’ and tested what happens when we mix vinegar and washing powder. It made the volcano explode.
towers
Second Class had a challenge to build the tallest tower using a variety a materials.
Children in Third and Fourth Class were also building tall structures!
Children picked a challenge card and had to make a structure from marshmallows and cocktail sticks!
catapults
Children had to design catapults using paper plates, elastic bands, plastic spoons.
