DHHS Counseling - Enrichment Opportunities

The Commonwealth Honors Academy brings together 120 current juniors from Kentucky and the surrounding region for 3 weeks for an exciting, challenging, academic enrichment program, hosted at Murray State University. Students will:

receive 6 hours of honors level university studies credit
have the opportunity to take an additional 6 hours of tuition free university courses at Murray State University during their seniors year and
be awarded a 4 year $2,000 renewable housing scholarship to attend Murray State University

Students must have:

completed their junior year of high school to attend
a composite ACT of approximately a 25 (or equivalent on the PSAT, SAT) and a 3.5 GPA
other credentials, such as community involvement, teacher recommendations are taken into consideration in the selection process.

St. Elizabeth High School Volunteer Program

St. Elizabeth offers a year-round volunteer program for high school students. For training and scheduling purposes, the program is divided into 3 onboarding sessions annually. Volunteers are asked to work a minimum of one 3-4 hour shift, with most averaging one shift per week. St. Elizabeth volunteer services will work with each high school volunteer to determine a best schedule during each session.

To become a high school volunteer, students will:

Have a Recommendation Form completed by a teacher, school counselor, or school administrator (non-family members).

St. Elizabeth High School Internship

St. Elizabeth offers a competitive, high school Service Internship Program, which provides students with an opportunity to explore a healthcare organization and the many departments that come together to impact the patient experience, both clinical and non-clinical. The internship experience uniquely prepares students by exposing them to working professionals and to the work environment in a way that cannot be duplicated in the classroom. Through a combination of observation and service tasks, students gain a better appreciation for the pressures that affect decision-making in today’s professional organizations and can identify additional skills they will need to better prepare them for a rewarding career.

The five Internship Tracks include:

Patient Care
Students will have a rotation in a variety of healthcare careers focusing on patient care and the departments that directly impact the clinical care provided to patients. Departments likely to include Emergency Services, Perioperative Services, Outpatient Services (Lab, Radiology, Therapy, etc.) and Inpatient Units.

Engineering/Facilities
Students will be partnered with maintenance staff members during patient room/floor calls which may include changing ceiling tiles, repair light fixtures, general door issues, etc. Students may be involved in assisting with large mechanical systems (HVAC), electronic systems (tv, patient beds, door controls) or fire alarm/sprinkler systems routine maintenance as well as trouble shooting. Facilities interns will also be exposed to current construction and renovation projects.

Information Technology
Students will work with St. Elizabeth Information Technology staff on variety of projects and learning opportunities. These opportunities will explore the areas of IT Infrastructure, Data Strategy and Analytics, including hands-on work with data systems and equipment.

Business
Students will explore the administrative side of healthcare through a rotation in the “behind the scenes” office environments that support the clinical staff and healthcare system. These areas may include Foundation, Human Resources, Marketing, Finance, or Training/Education. There may also be inclusion of some areas such as Gift Shop or Target Health/Wellness.

Culinary
Students will learn what it takes to manage a commercial kitchen. They will be exposed to all aspects of the kitchen including product identification, proper food storage and preparation, sanitation, and compliance regulations, as well as expose to the cooking service line and daily production. Interns will also learn that the culinary field in healthcare is growing to include educating the community of proper cooking and eating habits, offering organic and scratch cooking for retail outlets as well as ensuring that the patients are offered meals that promote healing and comfort.

Hanner's Heroes
Hanner's Heroes is a program in Kenton County Schools that pairs high school students with elementary school students in an effort to create and foster a successful learning environment in the classroom and beyond. The hope is that high school students will serve as mentors and coaches to their elementary students, being a positive role model and building a relationship with their assigned students.

Students are eligible to participate in Hanner's Heroes if:

They have a true desire to build relationships with elementary students to help them succeed
They can commit to being a reliable, consistent presence for their student all year
They can transport themselves to and from their Hanner's Heroes site, as these meetings will take place outside of the DHHS school day

NaviGo

NaviGo Scholars is a dynamic work-based learning program that connects high school students with local businesses to explore future career pathways. Through NaviGo Scholars, businesses in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky have a unique opportunity to connect with high school students who demonstrate both interest and potential in their industry.

Business sponsors engage directly with students—guiding them through career exploration and exposing them to the wide range of opportunities within their field. Applications open in August (for fall, spring, and year-long groups) and again in November (for spring-only groups). NaviGo promotes these opportunities through school and community networks, social media, email campaigns, and word of mouth. Sponsors then review applications and select the students for their customized Scholars group.

Each group meets twice a month with a dedicated coach—once at the sponsoring business location and once on a local community college campus. These sessions provide hands-on, real-world learning experiences that help students better understand career pathways within your industry.
