Virtual Rooms can be a powerful tool when implemented with PURPOSE and INTENTION. Parallels are often made between Virtual Rooms and Bitmoji Classrooms as they incorporate the same aesthetic, design, and communication goals. Virtual Rooms are digital "rooms" that are structured to provide students with a virtual environment that provides resources to support content exploration, emotion regulation, or a variety of other purposes.
Rooted in culturally responsive teaching practices, Virtual Rooms start with teachers having a deep understanding of the beliefs, culture, and behaviors of the students in their class. What excites their students? What is valued by students based on their home life or peer interactions? What do the students personally need to be successful in their learning? These are just a few things to keep in mind when analyzing known Virtual Rooms and how they might fit the needs of students. What might be considered a relaxing environment for the teacher might not be considered a relaxing environment by the students.
Explore the Virtual Room below and think about how you might use a room like this type of room with your students. What ideas does your exploration prompt for ideas for your own room? What questions arise during your exploration (write these down so that you can revisit throughout the duration of this course or feel free to reach out with any questions)?
Starting today, you will have the opportunity to take what you learned and create your own Virtual Room. Each day your work will build upon the previous day and at the end of the course, you will have a Virtual Room you can use with your students.
💾 Create a Google Slide presentation to use for your virtual room.
🧠 Start thinking of a topic for the content of your room. For the remainder of the course, you will be introduced to a variety of different implementations, so you are not held to an idea that you came up with today. Will this be a relaxation room, content-driven room, virtual library, virtual classroom, or something else?
