SEL can look different in grade levels and even within classrooms of the same grade level. At the heart of SEL, the teacher is supporting individual student needs. Videos can serve as a conversation starter for a whole group or even an individual who is having difficulties communicating and managing their emotions. In the article, "Connecting SEL and Social Skills Using Film and Video," it is stated that " video modeling is evidence based and highly effective. If you are unfamiliar, video modeling means using video or film to teach a new skill—a great strategy for all exceptionalities and grade levels and for teaching a variety of skills. The other benefit of using video modeling is that you can cover lessons that incorporate all five SEL components by showing what not to do followed by what to do in any given situation." Using videos as SEL conversations starters is also a great strategy that can be shared with parents for an at-home connection!

Social and emotional learning are skills that we use everyday throughout our lifetime. The more we can integrate and repeat these lessons through various mediums, students will start to recognize the connections. Don’t think about SEL as one more thing you have to teach, rather think about what you are already teaching and how you can add the SEL component. Videos are a great way to do this!
