Technology has becoming a tool that has intertwined itself in so many aspects of our personal, professional, and school lives, sometimes it is hard to truly disconnect. The same goes for students as for many of them, their school work continues outside of regular school hours. Plus, we have the Internet at our fingertips all the time, so when we are curious or want to learn something new, we can find answers and satisfy our curiosity in a matter of minutes.
It is important for teachers to understand that SEL conversations and vocabulary can be interwoven into different content areas and especially when addressing digital citizenship. Interested in how the CASEL Core Competencies and Michigan SEL Indicators intersect with the Michigan Integrated Technology Competencies for Students (MITECS). Check out the crosswalk below!
In the article, "4 Ways To Teach Digital Citizenship Through SEL", it is stated that "social and emotional learning (SEL) can shape students into strong digital citizens by equipping them with the knowledge and skills to protect their own data and reputation and be considerate of others." Not only will teaching students ways to be good citizens online, it is also important for them to understand that the same guidelines pertain to their actions and words offline as well. Empathy is the tool that can be the most difficult for students to internalize, but the frequency in conversations as it relates to responsible decision making will help build safe and strong digital citizens.

We are all digital citizens. In this day and age, students are a part of many digital platforms. Teaching skills to navigate these platforms safely is imperative. Responsible decision making occurs in all environments. Students may be tempted to do something that they wouldn’t otherwise because they don’t think they are seen. However, we know that words and actions matter whether they are in person or online.
