Social-Emotional Learning should not be something that is taught in isolation at school. When continued support, conversations, and teaching takes place at home as well as at school, students can learn to identify and manage their feelings across multiple environments. Looking for some ways to support home SEL connections? Try a choice board of activities to help parents and care-takers engage in SEL support at home.
Social-emotional learning is not something that needs to be taught in isolation in school. There are many opportunities for parents to teach their children self-awareness, self management, responsible decision-making, relationship skills, and social awareness within the context of their home relationships. In the Edutopia article, "Social and Emotional Learning: Strategies for Parents," some strategies that can be practiced at home are:
Being a good listener
Modeling the behavior you seek
Nurturing your child's self esteem
Respecting differences
Taking advantage of support services

Students do not stop reading when they leave the school building. Similarly, SEL skills should continue beyond the school day as well. Consider how you are going to develop a partnership with parents to develop these skills. Don’t let the “jargon” get in the way of your mutual goal of having students that are learning productive members of society. Consider sending a survey to parents helping them to identify the skills that they want their students to learn and them make the connection.
