Define Culturally Responsive Teaching
Reflect on ways to make your classroom learning environment more culturally responsive to your student population
Approach this learning experience with a growth mindset
Keep an open mind for new possibilities and uses
Find a quiet spot where you can relax and learn
One of the leaders in culturally responsive teaching is Zaretta Hammond. She defines culturally responsive teaching as:
"An educator's ability to recognize students' cultural displays of learning and meaning making and respond positively and constructively with teaching moves that use cultural knowledge as a scaffold to connect what the student knows to new concepts and content in order to promote effective information processing. All the while, the educator understands the importance of being in a relationship and having a social-emotional connection to the student in order to create a safe space for learning.".
The culture that defines a student is much deeper than their ethnicity, community, culture, or gender - it is about the unique factors that comprises identity. This could be interests such as music, sports, video games, crafts, reading interests, or simply things that the student chooses to engage in when outside of school. By leveraging the wide range of interests and identities that comprise a classroom learning environment, teachers can spark interest and ignite their minds. As stated by Alicia Discepola in the video, some approaches towards cultivating a culturally responsive teaching and learning environment include:
Include learners in their own learning
Open the lines of communication
Integrate high quality digital content
Build digital vocabularies
Use technology to personalize learning
Promote student voice and choice
Honor individualism while facilitating collaboration
Set and communicate high expectations custom to each student
Provide meaningful feedback
Reflect on what we know, and what we don't know
In the video, Alicia Discepola mentioned several ways that educational technology can be used to foster a culturally responsive teaching and learning environment by providing relevant and responsive instruction. Some of the tools she mentioned (as well as others not mentioned) are listed below.
Website Accessibility - Include accessiblity tools such as text to speech, translation tools, and share information through multiple means
Virtual field trips
Augmented Reality
