MLIS Program Learning Outcome: Evaluate systems and technologies relevant to a particular information content.
Description: The goal of this project was to develop a high level budgetary for the Seattle Public Library. To do this a sample of materials usage data was downloaded from the Seattle Public Library database. This was a gigantic data file that required a tremendous amount of scrubbing to get the data in order for analysis. Once the scrubbing was complete a cluster analysis was executed using the Weka data platform. This revealed that the library’s most popular item was fiction books and second most being drama video discs. Using this information a percentage breakout was developed on how to allocated funds for each genre and item type throughout the year. This assignment allowed me to develop skills in data modeling using a new technology to solve for the projected library budget.
