RDA Guidelines
Hepburn High School will follow Resource Description and Access (RDA) guidelines. To quote Houston’s Organizing Information in School Libraries, “the RDA core elements are the required information that must be included in a catalog record. There are specific locations in the MARC record where these core elements are placed” (Houston, 2016, p. 72).
Please note the tables (on the left hand side) from Houston for examples of RDA elements.
There are elements that should be included in the record that are not core RDA elements such as Notes (500s fields) and Subject Headings (600s fields) (Houston, 2016, p. 73). Please see the MARC Records and Enhancements page of this website for further information about these elements.
MARC 21 Standards
MARC 21 standards will be followed for bibliographic and authority records at Hepburn High School.
o The workflow for MARC 21 records can be found in Organizing Information in School Libraries which will be kept at the front desk and found on pages 81-83. It includes the following steps for MARC record creation:
“STEP 1: Identify what is being cataloged and enter information. STEP 2: Identify information displayed on the item to be transcribed. STEP 3: Identify information to be recorded. STEP 4: Apply Subject Headings and Call Numbers,” (Houston, 2016, p. 83).

Dewey Decimal Classification System
The Dewey Decimal Classification System will be the primary classification system for resources and materials utilized at Hepburn High School.
o Please see the DDC 23 Summaries, accessible through the following link https://www.oclc.org/content/dam/oclc/dewey/ddc23-summaries.pdf for more information on the Dewey Decimal System.
o Dewey Decimal Classification will be used to prepare students for research using public library systems.
