To Create MARC Records, the Following Will Be Done:
- Follett software will be used as the main library software for Hepburn High School Library and records can also be created using BestMARC software and imported into Follet.
o Please use Houston’s Organizing Information in School Libraries, specifically pages 81-83. It includes the following steps for MARC record creation, “STEP 1: Identify what is being cataloged and enter information. STEP 2: Identify information displayed on the item to be transcribed. STEP 3: Identify information to be recorded. STEP 4: Apply Subject Headings and Call Numbers,” (Houston, 2016, p. 83).
Note: The following tags are based on information contained in the Book Cataloging Worksheet provided in the course, LIS-60624-001 - Cataloging for School Libraries, taught by Dr. Mary Ann Stahr (n.d.).
Tags that should be included in records are:
o 020 (ISBN)
o 050 (LOC call number)
o 082 (Dewey call number)
o 100 (Main entry – i.e. creator of the work, for example the author)
o 245 (Title statement)
o 246 (Varying form of title)
o 250 (Edition)
o 260 (Publication, Distribution, Imprint)
o 300 (Extent – i.e. pages and dimensions)
o 400 (Series)
- Enhancement Tags can include:
o 520 (Summary note)
o 521 (Target Audience note)
o 586 (Award note – ex. Newberry Award or Caldecott Award)
o 650 (Subject or Topical entry)
o 658 (Curriculum Goal or Objective)
o 700 (Added Entry – ex. Illustrator)
