Responsibilities and Permissions
The school librarian is responsible for selecting, editing, and maintaining catalog records.
Paraprofessionals, such as teachers aids, answer to the school librarian who designates tasks such as reshelving books, shelf-reading, and helping school community members locate materials on the shelf and using the online library catalog. Paraprofessionals can help label items and put the barcodes on the items which the librarian provides for them, as well as covering the print materials with Mylar. Paraprofessionals can gather information for new or donated materials for MARC records, such as information for tags, and they can fill out a worksheet with the required tag information, which they can give to the librarian to catalog. Once the paraprofessionals have had enough practice filling out worksheets, and the librarian feels they are ready, the paraprofessionals can be allowed to catalog materials. The paraprofessionals will be given records to catalog by the certified librarian who will always double check their work to make sure the records have been filled out properly. The certified librarian is the person primarily responsible for the accuracy of MARC records.

The cataloging worksheet filled out by paraprofessionals is listed on the left.
Concerning record selection, barcode assignments, and vendor specifications, the vendor preference will be to use the vendor Follett to search for new materials that correspond to the school and states curricular standards to add to the collection, and to select records from. When new materials are received, use Follett to generate a new barcode, and to create and import records, using copy cataloging. If Follett does not provide a record, create a record using original cataloging. On the barcode stickers the words Hepburn High School Library will be written above the barcode.
