Rationale
This online policy manual is designed to be used by the students, faculty and staff of Hepburn High School Library (an invented school library). It is designed to further academic achievement through providing school community members with a variety of resources on how to navigate the library’s catalog, on understanding the library’s various policies, and on what standards the library follows, such as RDA and MARC 21 standards. With this understanding students, teachers, and other community members can understand how to apply it to their research when working on projects, studies, and other school activities. For example, it is helpful to know that the 500s section in Dewey is where information on the sciences is located if a student is doing a science project that requires background research. When students know what the Dewey numbers on the book spines mean, research becomes easier for classes and the classification system becomes more approachable. If a student knows how to navigate the library catalog, then discovering resources becomes easier. A school library should make sure that it’s “classification and cataloging” are “user friendly” so “that resources are made readily available to the user,” (Houston, 2016, p. 11). This online policy manual is designed to help students and professionals independently navigate and discover the various materials and resources the library provides, in order that students, faculty and staff can have easy access to resources required to meet their curricular needs and learning outcomes. In short, this manual is designed so that school community members can have a guide on how the library catalogs information, so that they themselves can benefit from it.
