In spite of the unusual brightness today, it is now 10 degrees outdoors in the Midwest, and my innermost being is begging for warmth. Even though February is the shortest month of the year, it always feels the longest to me. This is partly because my seasonal sadness is at its worst around this time, and despite how many layers I wear, the cold weather always seems to pierce my inner happiness.
This year we are actually going away for Spring Break YAY! Usually, we are a staycation type of family to avoid the crowds that flock to warmer places during the month of March into April. But this year we decided along with good friends of ours that we would brave the lines, crowds, and meltdowns, and even if it meant just a week of pool days, a little getaway would be more than welcomed. That also means a total of at least 5 kiddos, with 4 adults traveling in busy crowded places, so I thought I might share some of my favorite tips and tricks to not only save money but make the travel experience not as miserable for all involved, yes momma that means even you! I wouldn't forget about you!
It's no secret that the US is a consumer nation, and I'm embarrassed to say that when I was on my honeymoon in the Caribbean 10 years ago, I checked two bags, one of which was practically overweight and included a pair of high heels. Why? What a shame! But after that trip, I made a commitment to acquire the art of traveling lightly. While having young children has undoubtedly made this objective more difficult, I'm delighted to report that our little family has perfected the backpack style of travel. Since there are no luggage costs and we can focus on the experience rather than the things we carry, it enables us to discover inexpensive tickets. See some of my favorite travel accessories below.
If you know me you know this is a given. I of course pack my Hidrate Spark Pro, but I also ensure my kids pack water bottles and we immediately fill them up after we get through security. I also put things I need (non-liquids of course) inside said water bottle until we are though security. Its a great place to carry charge cords, ear buds, or even travel size toiletries.Â
I did indeed just say that. I don't mean clip your passport for the world to see, but often I take a ball cap to cover my head in the sun, and at least one of my kids needs a floaty. Even my water bottle gets clipped to the bag using the clips noted here below. This allows me to utilize the side pockets in a book bag for other needs, maybe a book, or headphones for my kids. And if you can buy sunscreen where you are going or ship it there via Amazon if you can.
While you may have dreams of being on trend for every event or occasion while on vacation, in reality, you won't wear the 15 outfits you pack, and will always gravitate back to your go-to pieces. I always recommend shoes you don't mind getting wet, a pair of closed-toed shoes for travel or hiking that can be washed, and one nice dress, 2 swimsuits, and a cover-up. Lastly, 2 pairs of comfortable shorts, and one travel outfit that's leggings or more covered up so you aren't freezing on the plans. See some of what would be must-haves in my bag!
