antarctic は時に大文字で Antarctic とも書き表し、形容詞で「南極の」（1398年以前に初出）、名詞で「南半球の空；南極地方」（?1425年以前に初出）を意味する。一方、arctic は形容詞・名詞として「北極地方の；北極地方」（1391年初出）、「極寒の」（1670年初出）を意味する。antarctic は arctic に接頭辞 ant- が付いたもので、これは「反...、非...；...の敵；…の反対の；…に対立の；...を防ぐ」を意味する anti- が母音の前で ant- となったものである。したがって、antarctic の原義は「北の反対の」であった。
『英語語源辞典』によると antarctic の主な中英語期の語形は antartik で、現代英語の綴字と比べて語中の <c> がない。arctic も同様に中英語では主に artik と綴られていた。arctic の借用元である古フランス語の語形も artique で、古フランス語が借用してきた中世ラテン語も articus であった。しかし、語源を辿った古典ラテン語の語形は arcticus で、ギリシャ語の arktikós「おおぐま座に関係する、北の」に遡る（ちなみに arktikós は árktos「おおぐま座、北部地方」から派生したもので、更にラテン語由来の「おおぐま座」を意味する Ursa と同じ印欧祖語 *r̥tko-「熊」に遡る）。『英語語源辞典』によると中世ラテン語の articus は古典ラテン語の arcticus の2つの c の異化により、最初の c が消失したもので、それが古フランス語を経由して中英語に借用されたことになる。近代・現代フランス語で artique から arctique に、antartique から antarctique に変化したのと同様に、英語でも『英語語源辞典』によると arctic は16世紀半ば、antarctic は17世紀初めにギリシャ語やラテン語の語源に倣って <c> が挿入された（ただし、OED では両語とも16世紀から <c> の挿入された語形が見られるとされている）。
antarctic に語源的綴字によって <c> が挿入されたことで、現在は綴字に合わせて第2音節でも /k/ が発音されるのが一般的であるが、『英語語源辞典』には現在でも /k/ が発音されないことがあると記述されている。OED は /k/ の発音の有無について次のように述べている：
The now nonstandard pronunciation without /k/ in the second syllable is still current in modern use. Several dictionaries of the late 19th and early 20th centuries record it as still widespread; although it appears to have become less frequent in later use (the various editions of D. Jones Eng. Pronouncing Dict., for instance, only give the standard pronunciation with /k/ ), it is still recorded in J. C. Wells Longman Pronunciation Dict. (1990) as widespread but deprecated. 第2音節に /k/ のない発音は非標準的な発音とされ、19世紀から時代が下るに連れ頻度は下がってきているものの、現在でも根強く残っているようだ。また、OED によれば arctic も第1音節で /k/ が発音されないものが非標準的な発音として現在も残っている。
