KAHS

New procedures for student visits the High School Counseling Office:

1) If a teacher has a concern about a student, s/he should call Mrs. Schumaker, Guidance Secretary, at ext. 5549. (Mr. Brett can be reached at ext. 5539, and Mrs. Smith can be reached at ext. 5541.) If no one answers at any of the above numbers, please call the HS office. Students should not be sent, or go on their own if on a hall/bathroom break, to the counselor’s office to see if the counselor is free (Passbook rules will be enforced). If possible, the counselor will come to the classroom to see the student. The counselor will either speak with the student in the hall and return the student to class, or take the student to the counseling office. Counselors will return students to the classroom as quickly as possible.

2) Face coverings will be worn and physical distancing, either in the hall or in the counseling office, will be adhered to.

3) Only one student will be permitted in the counselor’s office at a time (No longer seeing groups of students due to distancing guidelines). If mediation between students is necessary, the counselor will need to find a large enough space for adequate distancing and then return for the students at that time.

4) If a student asks a teacher if s/he can see the counselor (non-emergency / non-teacher concern) the student should be encouraged to email their respective counselor (Mr. Brett - Grades 10-12, Mrs, Smith - Grades 9-11). A counselor will get back to the student as soon as possible.

As always, if a student shares that s/he is being harmed, or wants to harm him/her self or others, you MUST contact the counseling office immediately (do NOT wait until dismissal). If you cannot make a connection to the counseling office, please contact the principal, nurse, or high school office. Do not wait for the counselor to return before seeking help.
