Aloha mai kākou!
In honor of May Day, I wanted to introduce to you :) It's title is "May Day is Lei Day in Hawaii." It was written in the 1920's when the idea of May Day was first introduced to Hawaiʻi. That's right, May Day is a relatively new holiday here! A hundred years ago, the only way to Hawaiʻi was by boat. As visitors would come onto shore, they were greeted with a lei. When they left, there was a lei given to them as well. The saying goes "if you throw your lei into the water and it floats back to you, that means that you as well will return."

May Day is Lei Day in Hawaiʻi
Garlands of flowers everywhere
All of the colors in the rainbow
Maidens with blossoms in their hair
Flowers that mean we should be happy
Throwing aside a load of care
Oh, May Day is Lei Day in Hawaii
May Day is happy day out here
