Staying Connected, June 22
#808Reads Summer Reading Challenge Total for Kailua El: 6376 minutes read since 5/29! Keep going!
What's Mr. Tanaka THINKING about? - I've started a garden from vegetable cuttings (carrot, onion, lettuce, potato) and 3 kinds of kalo. I'm wondering how to keep the pests away from my future food (slugs and bugs mostly).
What's Mr. Tanaka CREATING? - Besides the garden, I'm 3D printing plastic face shield visors to donate to health care workers. I'm also making t-shirt designs for my Spartan/Obstacle Course Race team.
What's Mr. Tanaka SHARING? - I'm sharing my efforts with the folks mentioned in the "Creating" section above. (see how they're connected?)
How is Mr. Tanaka GROWING? - I am working through some online classes for teachers so I can be a better librarian for you all. I have daily reading and writing to do, just like you. Except when you're an adult, you become your own teacher and have to give yourself homework and projects. Lifelong learning in action, my friends!
So many changes and developments:
I apologize for not keeping up with this page. As you are hopefully aware, the re-opening of school has been a massive undertaking. We are still hammering out details, but there are a few certainties:
We will have Specials classes for ART, PE, and LIBRARY. The rotation schedule will come later.
Students and teachers will be able to borrow books, but we will all have to learn how to use place books on HOLD through the library catalog LS2. More information on how to do that is coming.
Percussionist Michael Wall of Artists in the Schools is still scheduled to work with our 3rd and 5th graders during Specials Library class time. He will most likely be teaching the song writing class remotely, but we will see how things go. Mr. Tanaka is working closely with Mr. Wall to make it happen.
The #808Reads Summer Reading Challenge is still going on. Keep reading through July and be in the running to win an autographed copy of Wendy Swore's books.
Email Mr. Tanaka at darren.tanaka@k12.hi.us with any wonderings and I'll see what I can do. Be well.

Mr. T's Art Project
Starting April 1, I will be posting progress photos and videos of my current art projects and writing a comic from scratch. Follow along and see it unfold. I started working on this during "Virtual Library Recess" in a Google Meet. If you want to join me, email me at darren_tanaka@kailua.k12.hi.us and I'll send you the link!
Reading Joy
A collection of Read-Aloud videos, ebooks, and reading challenges.

Things I've posted before, browse through for any treasure you may have missed!
April 6 catch-up "nest" and "puddles"
--------------------------
April 3 prompt is "Umbrella". Moose sheltering from rain under a mushroom. Is he running away? Lost? Exiled?
-----------------------------------------
April 2 prompt is "Eggs". Hmm. Moose's job is to guard the caterpillar eggs and babies from predators.
--------------------------------------------
April 1 - Art Progress
Today's prompt was "butterfly", so I started designing a character that I'll use throughout April and see what kinds of stories I can make.
