History is a popular Humanities choice at KAA & our students are curious individuals who ask questions, consider alternative views and think critically about the world around them.
The wide range of content covered is extremely relevant to current affairs, and the skills that are developed - analysing sources, thinking critically about interpretations, and developing persuasive, evidence-based arguments - are essential tools for your future. Many of our former students have gone on to study at prestigious universities, including both Oxford and Cambridge.
Studying history A-level will provide you with a deep understanding of the development of the most powerful country in the world. You will learn how a system of segregation and discrimination was created and resisted in South Africa. You will be introduced to the key figures of the Tudor Era, men and women who laid the foundations for the country we live in today and understand why these figures faced opposition and rebellions. Finally, you will utilise several historical sources to produce an extended piece of coursework.
Your first task for History Progression is to complete some background work on South Africa between 1948 and 1994, often referred to as 'The Apartheid Era'. To understand this bit of history you need to understand what South Africa was like before 1948.
-Who were the original inhabitants of South Africa?
-Why were European people living in South Africa from the 17th century onwards?
-Why did South Africa develop so rapidly and become the location of bloody and violent warfare in the 19th century?
-What was it like for Black and White South Africans before 1948?
