A set designer’s job is to design and create a set or an environment. This can be for a film, TV show, photoshoot, theatre production or any other type of performance. A set designer will work closely with the director and other members of a production team, it is their job to accurately portray the setting in which the action should take place.
If a production is set in a specific era or place, it is the designer’s job to research what that time or place should look like and recreate it. The set is vital in creating a believable and visually interesting atmosphere. The set designer must also think practically, considering how the performers can move around and interact with the space.
This is a set designed by Simon Costin for a photo shoot with famous photographer Tim Walker
1. How would it feel to stand in this set? How would you move around it?
2. How has the designer responded to the space?
3. Has the designer thought about colour in this set? If so, how would you describe their colour choices?
4. Does this set correspond to a particular era?
5. If this were the set for a film scene involving two characters, what might they be doing/saying? What would the atmosphere be like?
6. What would be the biggest challenge in creating a set like this?

Imagine one of your favourite books is being made into a film and you’re the set designer
Choose just one setting or scene and draw out your set design
Think carefully about the location and the period. Every object and decoration should be realistic to that time and place - do some research into what that era looked like
Are particular objects mentioned in the book? Make sure to include them
