AspHire Mock Interview Day at Longwood University
Six seniors traveled to Longwood University for the 2nd Annual AspHire Mock Interview Day. In the weeks before the trip, students completed and fine-tuned their resumes. Local businesses and college employees conducted the interviews, providing valuable feedback to the students.
In addition to interviewing, students attended numerous workshops that covered the topics below:
Time management and Work-life balance
Teamwork and Problem-solving
LinkedIn and Indeed
Professionalism and Communication
HR and Benefits
Students also participated in a business luncheon. During the luncheon, they networked with other business professionals and students from Region 8 high schools.
Students from 7th and 10th grades attended the Career Choice Youth Expo 2023 event at Hampden Sydney College. Many career paths were represented. Students received an abundance of information and were able to participate in many hands-on activities.
Coming soon to a fish tank near you! Agriculture, Culinary and Marketing students are partnering to provide live fish to the Culinary Arts dept. Another aspect of this school- based enterprise is selling fish to local farmers to stock their ponds. Students will also use aquaponics to grow plants and vegetables. Mr. Jerry Streat, Human Resources Coordinator with the Commonwealth of Virginia Dept. of Corrections visited LMS and CHS on Tuesday, 9/27. He talked to the students about career opportunities in corrections. He also discussed the importance of having a strong work ethic and developing mandatory employability skills while in school.
Guest speakers in our schools are a huge part of Work Based Learning. Career Awareness is the first step in Career Preparation. We plan to have more guest speakers in the future to talk to our students.
MSTC Matt Lilly visited CHS this week to discuss careers in the Coast Guard and the benefits of working in the military.
Marketing students build displays for merchandise sold at the School Store. Students in all 4 marketing classes run a school-based enterprise during lunches at CHS.
Students use class time to take inventory, design and order merchandise, set up pricing and design displays. The school store not only sells school supplies but also Charger gear and spirit items such as foam fingers and pom poms.
Recently, marketing students created t-shirt designs as a class project. The student body voted on the best design. The winning design was from Anthony Inzeo, Hunter Word and Logan King. The “Charger’s Country Let’s Ride” t-shirt is a homecoming keepsake that also honors Coach Wallace Owen. Contact Jamie Buchanan at james.buchanan@k12lcps.org to buy a t-shirt. Ethan Hoover and Austin Hoover, with Victoria Fire & Rescue, visited and gave a presentation to Mrs. Watson and Ms. Wilkerson's Career Investigation students at Lunenburg Middle School. Ethan and Austin are both graduates of Central High School, and they discussed careers in EMS and firefighting. Students were able to interact with them and ask lots of questions!
Chef Tyer from Culinary Institute of America Visits Culinary Students
On 10/25, Chef Tyer, Class of 2022, from the Culinary Institute of America visited Mrs. Hilliard's Culinary Arts students. She demonstrated how to make spatzle. Chef Tyer also talked about pursuing a culinary education at the Institute and careers after graduation.
Recently, Mrs. Johnson's 1st block class was introduced to Majority Clarity. This online platform provides personality and learning assessments, career exploration videos and activities for over 66 paths. It also provides post-secondary and financial aid information.
MST1 Barry Spiro spoke to 6th and 7th grade students about U.S. Coast Guard careers and STEM careers.
Mrs. Clark from the Dept. of Corrections visited the 6th grade Career Investigations classes. She talked about careers in corrections.

Nurse Aide Students Complete Clinicals
CHS Nurse Aide students work to complete clinicals at Wayland Nursing and Rehabilitation in Keysville. Their Nursing instructor reports they are all doing a great job!
STEPS Visits CHS
Christin Jackson, VP of Workforce Development at STEPS, Inc., visited students at CHS to discuss the employment opportunities available. She also highlighted volunteer and internship opportunities that can help students decide which career paths to take once they graduate. Ms. Jackson also discussed their Headstart program for those students interested in early childhood education. A field trip will be planned soon to tour their facilities.
Teachers for Tomorrow Students Tour Longwood University and Andy Taylor Early Childhood Development Center
The CHS Teachers for Tomorrow students visited Longwood University on March 22. Students attended a presentation in the Admissions office and toured the campus with a Longwood Ambassador that included the Rotunda, the new Upchurch Student Center, and an exclusive tour of the Andy Taylor Early Childhood Development Center. The director of the center talked about internship opportunities available for students while in high school and college.
Students ended their visit with lunch in the campus dining hall. Another highlight of the trip was the students were able to meet and take a picture with President Reveley.
Many thanks to Rosa Townsend, Longwood University Transfer Navigator, Early Childhood Education, the Admissions Office, and Emily Davidson, Site Director for the Andy Taylor Center for Early Childhood Development for a special trip. Longwood also provided transportation and lunch for the students.
