John Hite, entrepreneur and graduate of CHS, visited Mr. Buchanan’s marketing class to discuss entrepreneurship. He also highlighted the importance of a strong work ethic and setting goals. John also talked about learning from mistakes and never giving up on your dreams
On Friday, September 15th Mr. Buchanan’s marketing and Mrs. Smith’s agriculture classes traveled to Parrish Farms, which is a local tobacco farm. Students learned about all aspects of tobacco farming. Mr. Ryan Parrish was kind enough to take the students through the steps of processing the crops to be ready for sale at the market. He explained all about harvesting and curing the tobacco and where it is sold. A majority of the tobacco grown in this area is sold to China. Students also learned about the migrant workers who work on the farm. Mr. Parrish said that they make an hourly wage and are provided a home and transportation. Students were allowed to explore the farm equipment. After the trip, students enjoyed lunch at the Dundas Hunt Club for lunch. After the trip, students created a bulletin board at school to highlight their trip and detail the marketing process of the tobacco.
Brad Davis with Dominion Power and Anna Betkowski from Strata Clean Energy visited CHS marketing students to discuss a solar panel project in nearby Chase City. They also talked about careers in the energy field. After the presentation, they traveled to the Otter Creek Solar Panel project for a tour. After the trip, they were treated to lunch at Marinos.
Students traveled to Southside Electric for a Day in the Life of a Lineworker presentation. SEC discussed the apprenticeship program through SVCC and all of the incredible opportunities available to students who complete the program. In addition to becoming a lineworker, graduates of the program earn several certifications including a Class A CDL, OSHA, and First Aid. Lineworkers demonstrated how tools were used to repair or replace lines. Students were able to experience hands-on training to conclude the day.
