Cotton fabric
Silk fabric
Needle
Thread
Sewing Machine
Ear Straps
We chose these tools because we need to sow together a mask and we are going to need a sewing machine, and we chose these fabrics is because with the research we conducted, they are the best fabrics to make a mask and to fulfill our purpose with this project. Cotton material works best to prevent particles from spreading, while silk works to minimize acne and breakouts as it rests against the skin for extended periods of time.
Silk fabric (3 feet)
Cotton fabric (3 feet)
Ear straps (8 feet)
Straps: The straps will be tested in two different ways. The mask will be worn for a certain amount of time to see if the straps hold up and if they feel comfortable. The second test will be while the mask is put in the washer to see if the straps rip off the mask.
Fabric/Material: We are checking the fabric integrity by putting it in the washer to see if it does not wear down the material or rip.
Sewing: We will do the same test as for the fabric and material in order to make sure that the stitches will hold.
Cut the silk fabric in 15”x15” squares (1 square per mask)
Cut two 13” pieces of elastic
Cut the 100% cotton fabric into 3”x5” rectangles
Fold each silk square into thirds horizontally
Fold sides inward 1”
Sew the sides, leaving enough room to slide the elastic through. At this point, the sides should be sewn and the middle of the mask should still be able to open
Put the elastic through the sides, tying them in slipknots in order to adjust them as needed
Insert cotton rectangle into the silk mask by sliding it in the middle
