Multilingual Language Learners

The Newcomer Academy houses the SEIP Program (Structured English Immersion Program) at Winter Hill is for students in grades 6 - 8 who are new to learning English. Students are in a sub-separate class with opportunities for inclusion in general education. Students learn English as another language while also learning grade-level content. Teachers modify their teaching methods to meet the needs of students as they develop English proficiency. ESL Instructional Specialists are assigned to each school to provide services to English Learners in general education and special education classes.

Ms. Salazar

ESL Instruction Specialist

As an ESL specialist, I work mainly with emergent bilinguals. I act as a bridge to help students transition from our Newcomers Academy to the regular education classrooms and succeed at it. I am originally from Colombia and therefore, a native Spanish speaker. I have been a teacher for over 30 years, and worked in Somerville for the last 22. I most frequently work in middle school, but I’ve been honored to work in every single grade Winter Hill offers, as well as every single program. I love what I do, and I think that our students are the best.

Claudia Seara-Galvez

Grade 6 Science, Social Studies and English

I was born and raised in Brazil. I have been working in Somerville for more than 20 years with multilingual families of many different languages and cultural backgrounds and I am very excited about this school year. Welcoming students and families into our WildCat community is truly something I enjoy doing as the year progresses. I love to travel to different places and explore new cultures and traditions.

Lindsay Weaver

7th and 8th Grade SEI and SLIFE ELA

This is my fourth year teaching at Winter Hill in our SEI program. Prior to teaching at Winter Hill I taught first grade at the East Somerville Community School. Before that I taught in the Cambridge Public Schools. I am one of the coaches for our Girls on the Run club and for our girls' middle school basketball team. I am an avid runner and beach goer. When I'm not in the classroom I enjoy spending time with my husband and daughter.
