Counselor’s Corner
Happy October to all our Community Schools friends! We hope that everyone has had an easy transition back to school and are acclimating well to a new school year. At all of our Community Schools sites, we are getting into regular routines and meeting new friends. We know that healthy friendships play a pivotal role in students’ social and emotional lives and so we are promoting strategies to help them develop and maintain healthy and strong relationships. At our sites, your students are practicing and strengthening their social skills including communication, cooperation, problem-solving, and empathy. We love watching them build a sense of belonging and connectedness with each other and how it benefits their own self-esteem. Be sure to ask your kiddos about how they are meeting and being good friends!

This past month has been an exciting time of growth and change at our afterschool program! We are so grateful for the opportunity to watch your children learn, explore, and thrive through fun and exciting adventures. From hands-on activities to new friendships, each day brings something special, and we couldn’t be prouder of the memories we've created together. Here's to even more learning and laughter in the months ahead!
PreK:
Hello everyone! I am Ms. Shruti, the pre-k teacher, and we have had a great start to the year so far! Every week, there is an overarching theme that is reflected in our daily activities that incorporate SEL (social-emotional learning), fine and gross motor skills, creativity, and more! These past few weeks, we’ve learned about what it means to be a good friend, completed scavenger hunts using our senses, mapped out our bodies, and have used our creativity to pretend to be unicorns and fairies.
K-2nd:
Hello family members! K-2nd grade has been off to a wonderful start this year, enjoying the nice weather and getting to know our new classmates and afterschool friends. Every day in afterschool we have time for a snack and playing with friends, splitting up into different exciting clubs, and getting some sunlight when the weather allows!
The kids have a blast with a variety of engaging activities! They got creative with “Wild Watercolors”, producing some beautiful and colorful artwork using watercolor paints. Our young builders also enjoyed a session of “Lego Building”, where they constructed imaginative structures and shared their creations with friends. In "Zen Zone," the children found a peaceful space to relax and practice mindfulness exercises, which helps them unwind after a busy school day. Additionally, they had a great time playing “Soccer”, learning new skills, and enjoying some friendly competition. Overall, it has been a fun and enriching time for everyone involved!

PreK
Hello, my name is Ms. Suri Gonzalez and I am the lead teacher for PreK here at Healey afterschool. Our students in PreK have been having a great first 6 weeks and have really been enjoying their group and the program!
We have worked on making friends, sharing materials, and solving problems on our own. At the end of the school day, the PreK group transitions upstairs with me to the afterschool room, where we start the day with circle time and sharing our thoughts about school and what we are learning. We then read a new book everyday, and discuss the moral of the story and what happened and why. At 2:30, we transition back downstairs to our PreK classroom where we eat snack. After snack, we participate in some activities: Lately we have been doing activities that have to do with colors, and learning the numbers one to ten. We have played with math cards where we match the number of objects to the number, and worked as a team to match them all up! We are excited when we get a visit from our 6th grade peer mentor Ember and she plays games with us outside on the Tot Lot! We have also had some gym time, where we get the whole gym to ourselves! We love to use the big blue foam blocks, and work together to build something spectacular!
K-2
Mr. Mack / Arts and Crafts Club: The Kindergarteners through second graders have been having a blast in the Arts and Crafts Club! They have been exploring their creativity through free drawing, guided drawings, and creating crafts. The other day we had an “art show” where everyone created Halloween inspired artwork and then the students got to share and talk about what they created. It is amazing to see them all being inspired by one another and exploring their creativity!
Mr. Mack / Storytelling Club: In storytelling club the kindergarteners, first graders, and second graders have been engaged in listening to various stories. The students love to choose what story gets read to them while watching the animation on the screen! We have read fairy tales as well as silly stories like “Ninja Babies”. They love the funny voices I make for each character.
Ms. Maria / Soccer Club: The K thru 2nd graders have been having a blast in Soccer club! They have really evolved their skills. They have learned to pass the ball to their teammates and to make strategy to win. They are leaning to enjoy playing with each other even if it happens that their team doesn’t win the game.
Ms. Maria / Gym Heroes: All the participants have been having a great time in this club. They have played 4 different sports so far. They all enjoyed all the games with played even Handball which was a game they have never played before. They all have been doing an excellent job leaning the new games a rules. They have really improved their skills and teamwork abilities.
Ms. Maria / Lego Builder’s Club: All the builders have been having so much fun with this club. They enjoy using Lego pieces to build their own buildings and different types of vehicles and fortress. They enjoy build in groups where they can all build a little bit of a bigger structure. The best part of this club is that they can use the imagination to create whatever Lego creature or structure they want.
3-6
Ms. M / World Travelers: The 3rd-6th graders have been having a great time in the World Travelers club! Students have been learning about other cultures, main dishes, languages, and national holidays through a series of arts and crafts activities. It has definitely been a great opportunity for students to talk about the different backgrounds each of them comes from as we have a very diverse group of students. We are definitely looking forward to learning more about other countries.
Ms. M / Gaming Zone: In the first few weeks of the gaming zone, students had the opportunity to play a lot of "get to know me" games that helped us get to know each other a little better and form a strong bond as a unit. Students also had the opportunity to play outdoor games and enjoy the last few weeks of summer and get used to the idea that fall has arrived and we have to adapt to it.
Mr. T / Game Show Club: We are officially off to the races in Gameshow Club! Every Tuesday, students come to club prepared to put their knowledge on various topics to the test, with their favorite host, Mr. T! Thus far, we have mainly played Jeopardy, and the categories have ranged from “Disney” to “Are you smarter than a 5th Grader?”. We have also begun doing the daily New York Times “Wordle” and “Connections” puzzles, and I am truly impressed with how clever our students are! Keep up the great work!
Mr. T / Basketball Club: So far, Mr. T has loved teaching his students his favorite childhood sport: basketball! Students have learned how to perfect the bounce pass, chest pass, and dribble without having the ball stolen by defenders. However, I would say the best part thus far for me has been our intense games of “Knockout”, where students put their skills to the test through some healthy competition. I look forward to having some scrimmages soon!
Mr. T / Beast Mode: Thursday afternoons at the Healey have been spent getting our energy out in the gym. Each week brings a new game, and so far we have played 2 hand touch football, dodgeball, and soccer. Students have been learning to work as a team and how to graciously accept defeat when they lose.

“I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.”
Happy Fall, y’all! 🎃 We can’t express enough how much our program loves the season of fall! It reminds us that change can be beautiful, be thankful for the daylight and allows for us to lead some of our favorite autumn themed activities. As always, the Brown School enjoys taking advantage of our local community spaces. We’ve taken a variety of nature walks on our neighborhood bike path, gathered “wands” for our Witches & Wizards club and got our energy out with our best friends at parks such as Albion, Lexington and Kenney! Our program is also joining in on Brown School’s Harvest Fest which will be held on Thursday, October 24th. Families are invited and welcomed to join in on their kiddos after-school classroom where we will be making displays, and painting pumpkins, to showcase at Harvest Night that evening. We will be sending out more information in the coming weeks.
As always, each month we like to highlight the special clubs or activities that take place at the Benjamin G. Brown. This gives insight to what we like to do but also, some of the creative outcomes. Take a look at some of the clubs that are in full swing during the month of October!
Grades K-2 Clubs that we would like to highlight for our October newsletter are:
Ms. Kelli leads a club every day of the week for our younger kiddos. One is called Aquatic Adventure and this week the students learned all about sea turtles and created their very own sea turtle family! Another club that Ms. Kelli leads is called Brain Teasers, where students use their critical thinking, and really focus on a new challenge each club! Here’s some riddles that K-2 kiddos have solved: What is always coming but never arrives?... What is always coming but never arrives? Can you figure those out?! They also love word puzzles!
Grades 3-5 Club that we would like to highlight for our October newsletter are:
Ms. Emma leads a handful of clubs for our older kiddos. One is called Puzzle Masters. This week the students in the club learned about hieroglyphics and challenged themselves to decode messages! They also created their own puzzles using popsicle sticks and challenged their friends to put them back together. Another one is called World Tour: Europe. This month in the club, students celebrated Hispanic heritage month by creating their own flamenco dance fans! Ms. Emma’s family is from Portugal and so her students also learned about the beautiful country and concluded the lesson by making their own Portuguese roosters, which is known as the symbol of Portugal.
El also leads a handful of clubs for our older kiddos, and has also been a fantastic addition to our Brown School family. One of these clubs is called Team Builders. In Team Builders, El leads and engages with large group activities. The importance of clubs like this is to allow for our kiddos to practice sportsmanship, strengthen confidence and improve the power of our peer relationships with one another across the three older grades. It also allows students to be silly, support one another and build friendships.
Our program has chosen to participate in a contest created by Young Artists called Monster Madness. Across each group, students have been creating a monster, crazy creation, or mythical creature. It’s been a lot of fun! That is it for this month! I hope you enjoyed reading about the fun things we have been doing this fall and enjoyed the photos that we captured. Don’t forget, Harvest Night is Thursday, October 24th. We hope you’ll join after-school for some pre-party fun!!!

Happy Fall, Everyone!
Session one is rolling smoothly, and the students are having a great time in their clubs! October has been an exciting month at East Somerville, and we’re thrilled with the progress our students are making in the After-School Program. They’ve been enjoying a variety of daily clubs, some for the very first time!
Our dedicated East Somerville staff work incredibly hard to ensure all students feel included and supported. They’ve created a wonderful enrichment curriculum with exciting lesson plans that engage the students through different lenses, Pre-K students "All About Me" unit. With apple, pumpkin, and leaf season in full swing, students are participating in seasonal crafts and will soon taste different kinds of apples to pick their favorites. They have especially enjoyed making caramel apple crisps with sprinkles to take home and Apple Cinnamon Play-Dog. They’ve also had a blast carving pumpkins and exploring what’s inside!
Kindergarten through 2nd graders are getting their wiggles out through active clubs, learning new athletic skills in Sparks Fitness and Sports Club, and playing all different types of gym games. Some students have even organized their own kickball games! They’re also tapping into their problem-solving skills through various science experiments and learning history basics while creating and launching paper planes. After clubs, kindergarteners enjoy story time, arts and crafts, and outdoor play, while 1st and 2nd graders focus on homework and independent reading before ending the day with crafts or playtime.
Our 3rd through 7th graders start their day with an hour of homework and independent reading. They’re exploring which clubs they enjoy most, including Scramble Dodgeball, Lego Club, Board Games, Bingo, and more. We’re also lucky to have Somerville High School students assisting during homework hour, providing more individualized academic support.
We’re excited to continue our partnership with Tufts University’s Strong Women, Strong Girls program, which helps our girls in grades 3-7 build confidence and leadership skills. This club meets weekly and is open to any girl interested in joining.
East Somerville Community School celebrated The Lights On Afterschool celebration and it was a huge success! The students participated in a variety of enriching activities, from sports to arts and crafts. We took the Lights on Afterschool literally and blew some balloons up to emphasize how afterschool can help them grow! Our older students took initiative and cleaned our outdoor playground showing their community building skills. It's wonderful to see how older students took on leadership roles by sharing their skills with younger peers and helping them read and do activities. This event provided a great platform for students to not only explore their interests but also contribute positively to their community.
Important Dates:
For those who signed up for the November 5th program at East Somerville, please arrive by 9:00am, with pick-up scheduled between 3:30 PM and 4:00 PM. If your child needs to leave earlier, please inform us ahead of time so we can make accommodations.

From mid-September until mid-October, there have been plenty of warm sunny early fall afternoons. Capuano after-school students have been enjoying lots of outdoor play in the Capuano playground.
Themes during this time period included Fire Safety and discussions in class about fire safety. The change of seasons also prompts us to concentrate on what is happening around us with themes like Fall, Apples, Pumpkins, and Fall Animals. Classes read books about spiders like “Bats” by Gail Gibbons and “Spiders” by Lola Shaefer. To go along with the books, the children made things like paper roll bats. Some other examples of activities include fall tree paintings, leaf rubbings and fireman hats. Children also did relaxation activities like yoga.
Children have choice time, which translates to: choosing what they would like to play with. Children play with puzzles, cars, trains, Legos, Duplo, Magna-Tiles, plastic animals, plush toys, you name it!
All the students in after-school at Capuano have been very busy cutting, pasting, drawing, coloring, and playing indoors and out.

Hi Everyone!
After school is going great, start here at the Kennedy! We are enjoying clubs and all the outside time we can as the colder months are sneaking up on us.
Ms. Alison is officially on maternity leave and we are all sending her love as she embarks on her new journey! Ms. Emmaline is stepping into the site director role, and Ms. Kelly is stepping into the assistant director role until Alison’s return in April.
That being said, please remember to message and email Ms. Emmaline in regards to anything about after school.
Pre-k Class-
This month, Pre-K has been doing all kinds of fun activities. During our pumpkin unit, we learned about the life cycle of a pumpkin and made books to bring our learning home. We even made a volcano inside a pumpkin using baking soda, vinegar, and dish soap. At the end of the unit, we painted our own pumpkins.
We've also had regular visits from fifth grade helpers. Pre-K always looks forward to their visits! They love to read stories with them, build Lego towers, and teach them to draw cool things like flowers and tigers. The helpers are so patient with the little ones and have been a wonderful addition to our classroom.
Ms. Emma’s Clubs
Random fun- Students have gotten to work with Carly and use their imagination to come up with and create what they wanted out of clay, then the following week they got to work with paint and painted their creations. Students have also got to have fun making and painting what they wanted out of puffy paint. This week during club students are going to get to make beaded bracelets.
Arts and crafts- we have made some fun artwork and crafts, Students got to tape a design that they liked and got to paint the open spaces, once the paint dried, they peeled the tape off to show their artwork. We also have made popsicle stick puzzles where students taped popsicle sticks together then drew a picture/design on it, once done they got to mix up the pieces and solve each other's puzzles. Also, students got to make and paint a fall tree using a-tips to make the leaves.
Lego Club- Students have been given a task each week that they have to create and make their own, such as to make their names out of the Legos however they want as long as I could read it, some students even made their names stand up and 3D. Students have also gotten to work together and had the task to make a maze out of the Legos and have Ms. Emma try to solve it.
Ms. Laura’s Clubs-
Ms. Laura’s clubs have had a great time making cute fluffy birds and Washi tape pencils! They have made small cardboard creations and talked about making homemade games instead of buying plastic. Also, making string paint organic shapes, a geocentric model of the universe, Mayan glyphs, and chemistry experiments have been part of the fun!
Ms. Silvana’s Clubs-
September is behind our shoulders and we are experiencing excitement and interesting things through the themes that we are working on Little hands big minds. Learning to do simple stitching and how to make a flower with pipe cleaners, and tie a bow. They are working as a team jumping to support each other and making decisions to who they are going to gift their project too.
In The Magic world of whales children are identifying and finding more information and facts about the whales 🐳 ,such as types of teeth, one blowhole ore more than one and many more. Children have had fun on art activities tracing, cutting and coloring whales.
The Sign Language club is one of the most interesting clubs I have led. Children are eager to learn and practice with each other. In just a few weeks they are able to sign almost 20 actions and words! They learn the numbers one to ten. Greeting each other in sign language feels great.
Ms. Kelly’s Clubs
Students have been accumulating points by assisting one another in maintaining a safe and healthy environment while demonstrating the Kennedy TIGER Habits.
In the movie critique club, students expressed their enjoyment of watching "Ponyo" and subsequently completed a movie review form to share their preferences and insights.
In the Art Appreciation Club, participants engage in sculpture projects, unleashing their creativity in a lively and enjoyable manner.
In the Debate Club, students will engage in discussions on topics such as Crocs versus sneakers, with many more intriguing debates planned for the future.
In the Lego Club, members have taken advantage of the pleasant weather by enjoying outdoor activities.
In the Healthy Hearts Club, students have been actively participating in outdoor games and exercises.
Ms. Emmaline’s Clubs-In craft and chat students have started learning about quilts and community art making. We watched a video on the history of quilting and started to plan our After school community quilt which we will be creating for the rest of the session.

Our youngest students have enjoyed learning Spanish words through fun games, making the experience exciting and engaging. They have also discovered interesting facts about other countries, broadening their cultural perspective. It has truly been an educational journey filled with fun and knowledge.
1st GradeEvery Wednesday, the first graders burst out of their classrooms like confetti, waiting to head to the East Somerville playground. As the sun shines bright, and the wind sways the swings inviting them to soar into the sky. They climb, slide, and spin, transforming the playground into their own kingdom of adventure, where imaginations run wild. Wednesdays are truly magical, a day when friendship and fun take center stage under the open sky!
2nd Grade
Our 2nd graders are on a creative roll in Crafty Kidz club! From painting vibrant masterpieces to exploring fun DIY projects, these little artists are letting their imaginations run wild. The joy of working together and sharing ideas is what makes our clubs so special!
3rd-6th Grade
Our older wildcats spent a large part of the first month playing interactive games and reacquainting with each other after Summer break. We opened with clubs during the later part of the month, and the kids were very excited to join. The students have a wide variety of different personalities and different interests, so we have a multitude of different clubs to accommodate them. Each student has a unique schedule of 5 different clubs ranging from “Chess Wizards” where students can learn how to play chess, to “Cinemakidz” where they can display their creative expression

Hello Families!
We’re officially back into the swing of things with one month behind us. We’re fully settled into our Afterschool routines, but we still find new ways to keep things fresh every day!
This month, our Pre-K friends been embracing the change of seasons by learning about the beautiful colors of autumn leaves. The children have been exploring the vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows that make fall so special and building collages that represent all of the color we see around us in nature. Ms. Jane loves incorporating animal yoga into our daily routine, and the kids love it too! We start our time together with relaxing music and gentle stretches, helping our bodies get ready to play and learn for the rest of the afternoon. With the sunny, crip weather of autumn, we’ve been spending plenty of time outdoors. The children have had a blast playing games like Red Light, Green Light and Mr. Fox. It's been so fun to see them enjoy the fresh air and work on their coordination and teamwork skills. For our Pre-K and Kindergarten students, Show and Tell with Ms. Jane every Friday has become a weekly highlight! The kids love sharing special items and stories with their friends.
In Game Show Club, we put our thinking caps on and tried out some of our favorite TV games! The kids had a blast testing their knowledge in Jeopardy and solving word puzzles in Wheel of Fortune. Our Little Big City Club transformed the students into Junior City Planners! Together, they built roads, parks, homes, and statues. We also got up close with nature in Bug’s Life club! After learning about some of our favorite bugs, the children crafted their own insect models using fun craft materials. We then took our learning outside for a scavenger hunt with Mr. Rodrigo, where we searched for and identified some of the critters we had studied. In Tales in Motion Club with Ms. Gianna, the children dove into the world of imagination by bringing the story Giraffes Can’t Dance to life. Using homemade puppets, they recreated the story in their own unique way. Our Bejewelers Club celebrated friendship by creating beautiful bracelets to share with friends and family. The kids put their hearts into designing these special gifts, spreading a little love from our afterschool program into the wider world.
Our 3rd-6th graders have been getting creative in their clubs like Book Brigade, where they’ve been reading Matilda by Roald Dahl and diving deeper into the story with a new activity that brings the book to life each week. WonderLab has embarked on new discoveries with awesome experiments that show us what happens if you add dish soap and food coloring to a shallow dish of milk (you’d be surprised by the results!) and what happens when oil and water don’t want to work together (you end up with your very own lava lamp!). Our adventures in science have helped us see colors fuse together, mixtures bubble up over the cup, and most of all, laughter and smiles from each other. Learning about other cultures across the world has taken us all the way to Greece this month, where we built our own popsicle stick Parthenons. Parkour is off the walls as usual, and MetroRock has been a great outlet for all our energy. We’re so proud of our students’ creativity and enthusiasm and love spending time at Afterschool every day.
