Happy May Argenziano families!! We are almost to the close of Session 3, wow that went by fast! The end of the school year is quickly approaching as well. Students seem to have thoroughly enjoyed a variety of clubs this session- learning new skills, building teamwork, and brushing up on their crafting skills. They also continue to have lots of fun being outside on the playground! Let’s check out what each grade level is up to.
*Parents/Guardians: With temperatures getting warmer please make sure to send your child with a water bottle and a hat or something similar for sun protection, thanks! Please label your child's belongings. Thanks so much for your donations and support!!
Keep an eye out for an email about our end-of-year family party and activities!
Pre-K/K (Ms. Shruti):
Happy May everyone! There is less than a month left of school—where did all the time go?! This past month, the pre-k and I took advantage of the spring weather and blooming flowers to learn about how flowers, plants, and fruits grow! We made vases and flowers out of toilet paper tubes and construction paper, we practiced our fine motor skills by folding origami tulips, and we learned about the process of pollination by making bees, bats, butterflies, and hummingbirds out of different materials. Happy almost-end-of-the-year!
K-2nd grade (Ms. Etta, Ms. Lauren, Ms. Sana):
Hello families! We have been having an exciting month. The children are enjoying the wonderful spring weather and take every opportunity to be outside, especially when they can play soccer and tag.
We have also been having a great time during clubs! In Puppet Workshop we have made different kinds of stick puppets, finger puppets and sock puppets. The children especially loved the sock puppets and “articulated” stick puppets, which means the arms and legs can move. We are now planning and preparing our puppet shows and are really looking forward to performing them for an audience! In Paper Crafters we have been using paper to make a range of projects such as paper chains, beads, collage puzzles, cards and envelopes, and origami. The paper beads and origami jumping frogs were highlights, and the general creativity has been impressive. In Amazing Mazes we have been solving and creating lots of mazes. Each student drew their own maze to put into a packet that we all solved together. We made two connecting mazes out of dominos and jenga blocks, and most recently made 3D marble mazes using tissue boxes and pipe cleaners. The complexity of the mazes has been amazing!
Overall, K-2 are enjoying the rest of Session 3 as we fly towards summer and look forward to the rest of this year’s afterschool adventures!
3rd-5th (Ms. Ana & Ms. Ileana):
In Boardgame Builders,
Students get to design their own game, learn about game mechanics, and work together to bring their ideas to life!
In the Reading corner,
Students get to unwind and relax with a nice book of their choice! It is a great way to end the week and relax with friends.

Hello families and happy May! In just a few short weeks our year will be over and it is truly amazing how quickly this year flew by. Your students kept us busy and engaged in games and crafts all year. One of the biggest hobbies we were blown away by this year was crocheting! Our 3rd-6th grade group has so many talented students who picked up a new craft so fast and have produced countless crocheted items it is amazing to watch. As always the dedication our students have to their beloved soccer game did not go unnoticed as students worked tirelessly this year on sportsmanship to ensure they did not get soccer taken away! Check out what students have been up to in their last session of clubs below.
K-2nd- Ms. Maria and Mr. Mac
Perler beads- This semester our students have been using perler beads to create different designs and patterns. Each time their designs become more complex and creative demonstrating their skills and imagination. We have created several designs so far but each time they become more interesting and impressive.
Art with fruit- This club has been one the students favorite. They get to use fruits to make unique designs. So far it seems that grapes and strawberries are their favorite fruit to work with. They work hard to create a design but they especially love to eat it afterwards.
PreK- Ms. Suri
The warmer weather is here and PreK has been enjoying going outside! We have been making friends and playing games out on the tot lot playground, and have had a blast spending time with some 3rd-6th grade peer mentors who come to visit us every once in a while. When we first get to after-school, Ms. Suri, Ms. Alexa, and Ms. Delmis read us a new story, and we talk about the characters and things that happen in the story. Then, we get to have playtime, where we get to use our favorite toys and materials together. We have been learning how to share materials and how to work together when making our lego, knex, and block creations. Lately, we have been working on animal life cycles and protecting the planet. We learned about frogs, butterflies, and ladybugs and how they start out so small as one thing and grow into these beautiful creatures. We talked about what pollution is and what we can do to keep our planet happy. We usually end our day by going outside to the tot lot where we have been enjoying the sunny days! There is only one month left of school, but we are happy to have met our friends in after-school and can't wait to spend the last month of school with them!
Art about the world- Each class we get to visit a new country. The latest two countries we visited were Chile and Egypt. They learned valuable facts about the country's culture and history. They are always very excited to learn new facts.
Lego legends- Students always have a blast playing with the Lego pieces. Each class they create something unique. They get to express their ideas through the blocks while having fun with their friends.
Handball- This club gives the students a chance to get out some of the energy. They get to improve their physical health and skills while having fun playing a game they really enjoy. They are always very excited for this club.
Disc Sports Club: In disc sports club the students have continued to explore the world of disc sports. Over the course of the club they have begun to master the skills and techniques needed to play Ultimate Frisbee. Students have continued to practice and portray excellent sportsmanship and teamwork. We have had a lot of fun playing these games with a lot of healthy competition! The kiddos get very invested and try their hardest when we play! With the remaining few classes left we will start to explore the sport of disc golf; continuing to demonstrate good sportsmanship and cooperation.
Book Club: The kindergarten, first, and second graders have been working so hard on creating their stories! They have done an excellent job creating characters, settings, and a cohesive story! Friends have been using their imaginations and creativity while also practicing great writing skills! This club has been going great and the students seem to be really enjoying it! MOst of our friends are almost done with their stories and pictures! They have been working so hard and are so excited to share their class book! Within the next few weeks we should be finished with the book and ready to send it to get published!
Learn to Draw Club: Students have continued to enjoy learning to draw various things. We have drawn more characters from shows, cute animals, and a variety of other objects, people, etc…! My goal for this club was to provide a space where students can fully explore their creativity and have fun creating their own art, and I can confidently say that I have achieved this goal! Students are always able to free-draw if the selected drawing does not excite them, which again allows for the use of their imaginations. We always have a blast spinning our wheel of names to see who gets to choose a drawing next and sharing our work!
3rd-6th- Mr. Alex and Mr. T
Painting Planets: The 3rd-6th grade students have really been enjoying the Painting Planets Club. The kids never want to stop painting when it is time to go! After exploring the Sun, Earth, Moon, and first two planets, Mercury and Venus, we began our journey outward to discover the rest of the planets in our solar system. So far, we have studied Mars, and last week, began our exploration of the last four planets in our solar system, the Gas Giants. The students really found Jupiter to be an interesting topic of study and a fun subject to paint, as it is so different from the planets we have studied thus far, and is particularly beautiful. This week we move on to study Saturn with its rings, and then after, silver Uranus and deep blue Neptune. We look forward to our last few classes of Painting Planets!
GameShow Club: Every Monday, students have been teaming up with their classmates and putting their thinking caps on in Gameshow Club! While the topics have varied each week, my famous “Healey After-school” Jeopardy continues to be a fan favorite among 3rd-6th-grade students. I love creating the clues because it gives the kids a chance to learn more about each other, and we certainly laugh a ton. It is a great club to start off each week!
Mr. T’s All-stars: In Mr. T’s All-Stars, students are encouraged to bring their A-game to the Healey gym every Wednesday! Kickball has consistently been our favorite game to play, but we have also enjoyed games of dodgeball and flag football.
Michelangelo Magic: In Michelangelo Magic, we have learned about the Taj Mahal and Eiffel Tower and even got the chance to make them out of clay. Lately, the kids have become super excited about using the Model Magic to make different colored-slime. I am amazed by the creativity of my students!

Hip hip hooray, it’s May! This month has been filled with many different happenings! Lots of club fun and new events took place this month.
Some K-2 Clubs: Lots of Legos, Sensory Scape and Fairytale Fantasy.
There’s no question of how much our after school students enjoy manipulative play. Our students, no matter the grade, are always keen on building and imagining! Lots of Legos is a student favorite. It’s an opportunity for our K-2 students to let their imagination and creativity roam free alongside their good friends. Whether challenged by a building prompt or from imagination, students in Lot’s of Legos are guaranteed to have a great club day.
Sensory Scape is a sensory-based club with activities that allow students to be creative and artistic using materials for sensory needs. This club promotes a different type of learning that students aren’t necessarily exposed to during the day. Sensory learning engages students with the world and learning through their senses! Just this week, the club kiddos made their very own sensory bottles!
Fairytale Fantasy is a club where students are inspired by the magical arts and create crafts! Crafts that students have done so far have been inspired by
In Fairytale Fantasy, the students will be creating a different magical craft each week. Some crafts have been inspired from Disney, Harry Potter, and various fairy tales.
Let’s highlight some more 3-5 Clubs: Sports Club, Danger Wizard and Save the Planet.
Sports Club was created for our active engagement kiddos. The 3-5 students are consistently choosing physical and active play during their free choice so why not offer a club that’s dedicated to participating in a new sport each week! So far this session we’ve learned the rules and engaged in the sport of basketball, bowling, football, baseball, hockey and soccer! Coming up for the next few weeks are: golf, volleyball, handball and the last two classes will be student chosen! It’s been a lot of fun seeing the kiddos expand their horizon of active play. During recess time students usually jump back and forth between soccer and football so it’s been nice to see them branch out!
Danger Wizard, a long-time favorite at the Brown School. It’s always fun to see students come back and share about their journeys, the monsters they’ve defeated, the loot they’ve discovered and sometimes - moments of peril! One of the stories was when one of their comrades got consumed by a gelatinous slime cube. Since we’ve had Danger Wizard for two sessions in a row, students have been able to take the reigns and assign themselves as the “Dungeon Master” so there's two “campaigns” running at the same time run by our very own students!
Save the Planet is a club that is dedicated to learning about endangered animals and threatened habitats and what we can do to help! Students have been working on an extended project where they learned, and chose, a few animals to make posters for and posted them in the library. Day school students then voted for which animal we should fundraise for: green sea turtles won! Students in the club have made bookmarks out of recycled materials and plan on selling them once they are all finished to parents for 50 cents which goes towards symbolically adopting a green turtle through WWF.
This month, we also had some fun events hosted by Project SHARE, which were led by Tufts University students. Project SHARE is dedicated to promoting health education and access to care within underserved communities. Grades 1-3 participated in an event called Teddy Bear Clinic. At the event, students were welcomed to bring their stuffed animals for a “check-up” and engage in hands-on stations that teach them about doctor visits, hygiene, and healthy habits. Grades 4-5 participated in an event also presented by Project SHARE students from Tufts University. At the event, students watched a presentation of information about how to make healthy food choices, reading nutrition labels, allergy safety, and basic cooking safety, then participated in an interactive learning experience, making a fun veggie face with dip.
We cannot believe that we are approaching the end of such a wonderful year! See you next month for our final newsletter. ♡

Even though May’s weather hasn’t been the brightest, it hasn’t dampened our East students’ spirits! We are well into our final session and couldn’t be more excited about the beautiful weather days here at East. Students have been enjoying the warm days by doing homework and reading outside, and even cooling down with popsicles while relaxing with friends.
Session 3 Highlights, Our East afterschoolers have been busy and creative! In arts and crafts, students made special gifts for Mother’s Day, choosing to create hearts, cards, and plant flower seeds. Many of them designed their projects from scratch, proudly surprising their loved ones with handmade gifts like beautiful bracelets.
The Pre-K class has also enjoyed reading books like I Have a Garden by Bob Barner, Inch by Inch by Leo Lionni, Planting a Rainbow by Lois Ehlert, Dandelions: Stars in the Grass by Mia Posada, In Our Garden by Pat Zietlow Miller, and many more. We’re all looking forward to seeing the results of their hard work!
In the garden, students planted seeds and regularly visited to water the plants and check on their growth. They’ve loved exploring the space and learning about how flowers bloom this time of year, how vegetables grow, and why they’re good for us. Through these hands-on experiences, students are also learning what living things need to survive and thrive. They’ve had meaningful discussions and asked thoughtful questions, such as: How are the life cycles of plants and animals similar to or different from the life cycle of people?
Our popular Spanish is Fun program dove into the meaning behind Cinco de Mayo and its cultural significance. Students learned about the importance of this day in Mexican history and enjoyed a sweet taste of culture with authentic conchas (Mexican sweet bread).
Older students have been unwinding after their hard work during MCAS testing. At afterschool, they’ve had opportunities to relax and socialize, whether through board games, sports, or art activities. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, our 3rd–7th graders have been cheering on the East basketball team in the gym. It’s been great to see them show school spirit and connect with peers, including students not in afterschool and others from neighboring Somerville schools. It’s a fantastic way to relax and celebrate their efforts during the school day.
We have some wonderful things happening this month! To wrap up a fantastic year and an even better Session 3, we’re thrilled to invite you to our Family Celebration on June 11! Join us for a fun afternoon with your children as we celebrate all that we’ve accomplished together. It’s a time to connect, reflect, and enjoy the community we’ve built.
We’d love your support!
If you’re able to contribute, please use the LINK to donate. Every bit helps make this event special. We can’t wait to celebrate with you!
Sun Safety Reminder: As the weather warms up, we’re taking sun safety seriously. All students must have sunscreen applied before outdoor activities. We provide both spray and lotion, and encourage students to wear hats and sunglasses. Please remember to pack a water bottle and sunscreen in your child’s backpack so they’re prepared to enjoy the sunny days safely.
We’re excited to welcome summer, but safety comes first!

The sun is climbing higher and higher in the sky as each day passes. Beautiful warm weather and blue skies mean that we spend more time outdoors in the playground. It sounds marvelous, and it is, but more outdoor time as we approach the summer solstice means increased risk of sunburn. Please pack sunscreen, especially on the final four half Wednesdays when Capuano after-school may be out in the noonday sun.
Since April vacation, themes have run along the lines of “Healthy Eating”, “Fruits”, “Birds”, “Zoo Animals”, and “Eco-Friendly.” The kindergarten students have focused on “Nature” and “Spring.”
Classes have read books like Daytime and Nighttime Animals, A Polar Bear Can Swim, The Magic and Mystery of Trees, It’s Tough to Be Tiny: The Secret Life of Small Creatures, and Little White Rabbit.
Mother’s Day fell in the midst of this period. We talked about how our mothers are special people, and made Mother’s Day presents and cards.
In about a month, the school year will be ending. We hope that you are beginning to look forward to the summer months ahead, and we are!
Projects related to the readings have included making fruit baskets, bird collages, cut-and-paste carrots, nature scenes, and collages using recycled materials.
We continue to have lessons on big feelings and dealing with big feelings. We also focus on what it means to be kind and how to solve problems with your friends.

Laura’s Clubs
Laura’s groups have been busy having fun this spring! In Slime, Goo Squish, kids made neon colored Oobleck, experimenting with color mixing in this strange substance. We have been making beautiful flower art from liquid and dry substance experiments on paper in Amazing Mixtures. The kids in the Make it Up club have been designing and constructing rooms for the small air-dry clay characters they have been making. In Claymation, groups are finishing up sets and props for their claymation scenes. Kids in Hang Out and Do Fun Things have been making lovely abstract art!
Mr. Christopher’s Clubs
Magic: The Gathering Club:
We have been playing with the decks we have created and playing with a new box of pre-made mini decks!
Dancing Around the World:
We have learned different types of dances and choreography. Recently, we did French, Korean, and American pop music!
Making Art History:
We have been making art and doing fun activities based on art movements! We have kept revisiting an activity where we make paper masks and outfits and create our own plays to act out.
Board Game Club:
We have been playing all sorts of board games together! Exploding Kittens has been very popular these past weeks.
Drumming Club:
We have been learning basic patterns and rhythms on buckets. Last week, we sat outside and practiced new techniques with buckets and drumsticks.
Ms. Emmaline’s fiber art club has finished their quilt blocks and is working on putting together the backing and batting. We are excited to show everyone our finished community after-school quilt at the end-of-year party!
Ms. Dinka’s Clubs
We are a few weeks to the end of this school year. Our out-of-school team has absolutely enjoyed working with kids, and our clubs are a place where these kids not only learn and express themselves but also build relationships, which is so important for them.
The magic of Lego! In this class and club, through involvement, students have connected, worked as a team more than just playing with Legos.
Students have developed communication, respect, and collaboration. It has been a wonderful opportunity to reinforce friendship skills, sharing, and more.
Pilates club has brought kids together, trying to learn new things, enjoying working out, and taking care of their health. We are learning and respecting the musical taste of each of the students, they can choose what background music they want to work out to. At the end, while we sip water and relax.
With the long day and the technology that often takes their attention, students need relaxing techniques that help them focus and express their potential on working with colors.
Mindful coloring is a club where kids are not racing, but calmly enjoying mixing colors, cutting, shaping their artwork, and making use of them in different ways.
Asking each other to pass markers or other materials, and complementing each other's work, shows a good bond. You probably have seen their coasters, placemats or other activities brought home by them. Some of the kids did them for the entire family. It has been an absolute pleasure working with your kiddos! Thank you!
Pre-K
This month, pre-k has been learning all about outer space. We've covered topics such as constellations, planets, the moon, and astronauts. We got to design our own constellations and talk about what they represent. We also made our own diagrams of the solar system and learned about how the planets orbit around the sun. However, my personal favorite was when we designed our own rickets that fly using straws. When we finished, we got to have a class rocket launch!
Ms. Kelly’s Clubs
In the tinkering and crafting club, students have engaged in creating fuse beads and participating in mindful activities, such as watercolor painting.
Within the gym class heroes club, students have enjoyed basketball games on the court while staying hydrated with their water bottles.
In the DIY club, students have been enthusiastic about making fuse bead creations and have also experimented with art by utilizing spray bottles filled with food coloring and water to produce a graffiti effect.
Additionally, in the journaling club, students have expressed their creativity by writing letters, cards, and poems for their mothers in their journals, all while savoring popcorn generously provided by Miss Kelly.

Hello Families!
This month, we had a bittersweet goodbye to Ms. Daniela! Though May was still packed with fun and excitement! From outdoor games to creative arts and crafts, each day brings something new to enjoy. Students can unwind, make new friends, and explore their interests in a safe and engaging environment. Special themed days and sunny weather add extra energy to our activities. Come see what our month full of laughter, learning, and lasting memories looked like!
Pre-K/Kindergarten
Our little explorers have had a vibrant start to the season! In science, they brought learning to life by creating erupting volcanoes and launching balloon rockets, sparking curiosity and excitement with other experiments, too. Through yoga, they’re learning to regulate their emotions while discovering the joy of movement and calm. In Pencils and palettes, letting their creativity shine, and learning how to draw step by step, and also experimenting with some other ways of painting. And with the Sweat Squad, they’ve been staying active through fun sports and energetic games. Even though it has been raining lately, Spring has never felt so alive!
1st Grade and 2nd grade
After school, our first graders embarked on thrilling adventures with the Treasure Hunters Club, where they delved into exciting quests and uncovering hidden treasures. Simultaneously, they joined the Hero Academy Club, engaging in activities that fostered teamwork, leadership, and personal growth, all while having fun and building confidence.
Our second-grade students have been enthusiastically participating in all the clubs offered this session. Among the most popular have been the Skillers Soccer Club and the Master Chef Club, both of which have sparked great interest and engagement. In the Master Chef Club, students have been learning how to prepare nutritious snacks and gaining a better understanding of healthy habits, particularly the importance of staying hydrated. They’ve also explored infused water as a fun and flavorful alternative to plain water. It has been truly rewarding to see our students so actively involved, building essential life skills while enjoying their after-school experience.
3rd-6th Grade
The weather has been warming up, and our 3rd-6th-grade wildcats are spending more time outside and enjoying the weather. The students are also enjoying the last few weeks of the club. Students have been learning a wide range of new material, from football, life in the prehistoric era, and they’ve even performed Karaoke and a Spanish play in front of their classmates. Stay tuned for next month!

Happy May!
Summer is right around the corner, but Mother Nature has been kind enough to give us a sneak preview of the weeks and weeks of gorgeous weather to come. When they’re not vibing to the tunes of Somerville’s famous Porchfest music festival or celebrating the lovely caregivers who make everything possible for Mother’s Day, your students are spending their time outside of the school day exploring their creativity and imagination here at Afterschool.
This month in Pre-K, our young learners explored creativity and hands-on fun through a variety of engaging activities! They built colorful towers using magnetic blocks, experimented with vibrant rainbow salt painting, and crafted beautiful fluttering butterflies and flowers using coffee filters and markers. We take advantage of the beautiful weather and go for a nature walk each week, and we even did some neighborhood decorating with sidewalk chalk. When the rain keeps us inside, we practice our fine motor skills by shaping the letters of our names with Play-Doh. It’s been a joyful month of learning, imagination, and sunshine!
We’re excited to welcome our Kindergarten through 2nd-grade kiddos to the new season of afterschool fun!
The warmer weather has been perfect for outdoor play, and we've been making the most of it. When we're not kicking a soccer ball or shooting hoops, you can find our young learners playing tag, letting their imaginations run wild. Inside, Brainy Brunch Jr. with Mr. Joseph has been a hit, sparking curiosity through random facts and playful trivia. Did you know that our kids think anyone born before 2000 might as well have lived with the dinosaurs? It’s a humbling (and hilarious) reminder of how quickly time flies.
When we aren’t exploring fun facts or learning about the ocean, we’re building masterpieces in Lego Art. Just last week, our young architects took on the challenge of recreating the Eiffel Tower – complete with elbow grease and a whole lot of creativity. Who knows what we’ll build next!
May has brought fresh air, blue skies, and some serious creativity to our 3rd–6th grade clubs. From planting flowers to designing magical movies, your kids have been busy learning, laughing, and trying new things, all while getting a little sunshine on their faces (and occasionally, a bit of dirt under their fingernails). Our young Garden Club horticulturists have been hard at work planting vibrant mums and transplanting their own seedlings into the planters in front of the school. The result? A blooming display of color—and a few very proud green thumbs. Who needs board games from a store when you can make your own? Our students in
Game Design Club have invented imaginative games and are now playtesting them on the playground—showing that teamwork, creativity, and a healthy dose of friendly competition can go hand in hand. Bead Masters club is crafting dazzling accessories while learning about patterns, symmetry, and the joy of making something beautiful with your own two hands. With the NBA Playoffs in full swing, our hoop stars in Basketball Club are building their own skills and learning that good sportsmanship is just as important as sinking that buzzer-beater shot. We can’t believe there’s only one month left in the school year; the sun is out, the jackets are off, and we’re soaking up every minute of this gorgeous spring weather!
