Happy January and a warm welcome back to all our families - we hope you had a peaceful and rejuvenating winter break! As we transition to a new year, we are off to an exciting and fresh start in Community Schools with a sense of renewal and empowerment. At all of our sites, we are reviewing our routines and expectations, and reinvesting in the values of our environments. This sense of shared community boosts our well-being and friendships as it reinforces our own strengths and mutual respect. Our reflection and renewal time also validates personal belief in our ability to grow and achieve our individual and group goals. We hope your kiddos are adjusting well to the start of this session and, as always, please reach out if you have any questions. Thanks and Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to our Healey families and friends! We are looking forward to all the opportunities for fun this year as our second session of clubs began this month. Students returned from break ready to take on the newest club selections and we are off to a great start!
Mrs. Suri- PreK
PreK has been hard at work this winter season enjoying crafts and time with friends. We worked together to build a giant block tower and made some cool structures with the connecting blocks in our class. This month we have been working on activities around the theme of WINTER! Our favorite activities this season have been turning our names into snowmen and presents. We experimented with glitter and made some beautifully unique snowflakes. We also really enjoyed getting to make our own bracelets! Every day is an adventure in the PreK room.

Comic book- The objective for the year on this club is to create a comic book. The students are going to create characters and use their imagination to illustrate one or multiple stories line about their characters. At the end of the year the students are going to do a small presentation on their comic book for the class.
Crafts- The goal of this club is to encourage creativity by creating different crafts. The first craft we created a paper snake. They all worked hard to make their projects and by the end of the task they were all able to succeed on it. This activity that involves cutting and folding are going to help them with improve their motor skills.

Hero’s power- This club's main purpose is for the students to practice physical activities and to learn new games. We have only had one class so far, but it really seems to be their favorite club so far. We are going to play traditional sports as well as games that they don’t usually play.
Board games genius- This club seems to be one of the kid's favorite clubs so far. They are very excited to learn how to play different types of board games and card games. We are going to continue working on not getting upset if they lose a match. Guess Who was the first game we focused on, and they really enjoyed playing it.
Painting- The focus of this club is to improve the students' artistic abilities and motor skills.
Their first assignment was to paint a watermelon. We started with a simple task and now we are going to evolve to more complex tasks. We are going to start using more colors and different shapes.

Sports Around the World Club: In Sports around the world students will learn about various sports and activities that take [place in different countries. They will examine how the sports are similar and different to ones they are more familiar with, as well as learning the history and development of the various sports. So far we have played a familiar favorite: basketball, and learned about a Swedish sport called handball!
Movie Critics Club: In movie critics club students will analyze various films. The objective being to understand the movie on a deeper level and discuss the life lessons being taught underneath all the fun animations and colors. To start, we watched Finding Nemo and talked about the importance of perseverance, being “flexible” (going with the flow like Crush the turtle) and overcoming fear. We have also analyzed Up discussing the importance of companionship, following your dreams, and exploration/adventure/trying new things/going out of your comfort zone.
World Travelers Club: In World Travelers club the kindergarten, first and second grade students will travel to various countries around the world to gain a better understanding of culture and traditions. We will discuss how cultures are very different all around the world and the importance of studying that to grow our own knowledge and understanding of collaboration with different people. We have not left the states yet! Our first week started by giving an overview of what culture and tradition are, and then making our very own little passports to use throughout the club!

The Healey After-school Program has gotten off to a fantastic start after the winter break! After a much-needed rest, both the students and I have returned to school with our batteries recharged and ready to get back into the routine. In my Art with Fruit club, students have enjoyed crafting and then eating their very own creations. Thus far, we have used both pineapple and watermelon to build rocket ships, and we have discussed the vitamins that are present in each of those two fruits. And of course, this club gives us a great excuse to use some chocolate chips to decorate our pieces of art! In Master of Games Club, we have been enjoying some board game classics, such as Monopoly, Guess Who, Sorry, etc. Our games of UNO! are always greatly competitive and Mr. Walters has even joined in on the fun. Lastly, in Flag Football Club, we have broken in some brand-new equipment, and students have been experimenting with playing different positions on the field. Additionally, I have been talking to the kids about different defensive strategies that they can use in order to keep their opponents out of the end zone. We are just getting started, and I look forward to an amazing next few months with my students!
Mr. Walters- 3rd-6th
Myths and Legends: In the first two weeks of Myths and Legends club, students have been exploring the foundational myths of Greek Mythology. Through the eyes of the ancient Greeks, we have seen the creation of the earth by Mother Earth and Father Sky, their first children, the Titans and the father of time, Cronus, and his children, the pantheon of gods, including Zeus, Poseidon, Hera, and Demeter. Students have enjoyed learning this creation story and discussing the meaning behind the different elements of the story and why they think the ancient Greeks created the story in the way they did. Each student keeps a record of the figures mentioned as we move through the stories, and takes notes on the different aspects of each character. We look forward to next week where we will learn more in detail about each member of the pantheon of gods, will pick one of their favorites or the one that they relate to the most, and will attempt to make an ancient style sculpture of their favorite one!

"January is the perfect time to reset, recharge, and renew your focus on what truly matters."
Happy New Year, After-School Families! Brown School hopes everyone has had a plentiful winter break with their loved ones. We also hoped you enjoyed joining our after school classrooms for our Winter Fest! We find that our students enjoy watching the “our year thus far” slideshow, especially when it’s accompanied with hot chocolate and fun crafts to do with their friends! Our older grades got a surprise visit from Mr. Kasey, a beloved 4/5th grade teacher from last year! As tradition, the way we like to bring in the New Year is with renewed interest in our clubs! That’s right - session two clubs have begun here at the Brown School and not only are students eager to get started, but also our fellow teachers.
Let’s highlight some of our K-2 clubs! Our first grade teacher, Ms. Ashley, has created a club called “Full STEAM Ahead” where students engage in exciting experiments! Each week this club focuses on science, arts and engineering. Second grade teacher, Ms. Kelli, has two types of clubs we’d like to highlight: Chamber of Secrets and Puzzle Solvers. Chamber of Secrets is a Wizarding World type club… a very popular club where students were eager to receive their Hogwarts express tickets! Puzzle Solvers has been a traditionally popular club where students solve riddles, brain teasers and even dive into some trivia! Our K-2 are really interested in testing their own knowledge! Finally, a must each session - our second grade teacher, Ms. Karen, leads a Mindfulness Meditation class where students participate in mindfulness through meditative coloring and cosmic yoga adventures.
Let’s take a look at what session two is looking like for our 3-5 students! Our third grade teacher, Ms. Emma, has created a club called “Pokeology” where students will test their pokemon knowledge through quizzes and competitions and learn new pokemon fun facts. Last session, Ms. Emma led a new club “Pokemon Trainers” (which was a massive hit!) so she decided to extend the experience! Assistant Site Director and 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Phillips, is leading a Reader’s Theater club where students collaborate to bring stories from books, plays, or scripts to life! Ms. Jasper, a day school teacher, has also joined in on teaching a club this session called Comic Club where students celebrate all that is comic books through creating their own storylines, characters and artwork to complete comics of our own. Our fourth grade teacher, El, is leading a Zine Club where students use collage in many different ways to make zines and other art! At the end of the club session, students will put on a Zine Fair where they can showcase their work and swap zines with their peers. And lastly, an honorable mention to Danger Wizard! The students at the Brown School are always in high anticipation for each gathering. Danger Wizard is where students learn to play D&D, Magic the Gathering and other exciting games with your friends. Build decks, create characters and become a real Danger Wizard!
That just about does it for the month of January. Students and teachers have enjoyed the warm welcome of session two! As always though, we find the time to enjoy our school’s blacktop where students' imagination runs free and joyful competitiveness thrives on our turf field! A friendly reminder that if the weather is 32 degrees or lower, students should have a coat, long pants, hats and gloves. If your family needs help getting these items, please reach out to your OST Site Director who can help you find gear in your child's size!
Until next month, happy New Year!
A friendly reminder: Kindergarten, First & Second-grade classrooms are looking for special guest readers! If you’re interested in being a guest reader, you can email Ms. Ashley at: amarks@k12.somerville.ma.us

East Somerville after school is starting the New Year off with a chilly start. We started this month by going over many of our routines and expectations. We reminded ourselves that we need to have walking feet in the hallways, be safe with our bodies, have listening ears, raise our hands when we have something to say, and also help friends out when we notice they need an extra set of hands. Circle time and pre-club meetings helped reinforce these values through books and songs.
PreK-2nd grade started the year off by “blasting off” into All About Space! They talked all about the planets, stars, and moons. The students are enjoying doing different themed projects as well. They have been learning all about different kinds of winter animals such as penguins, snowy owls, foxes and so many more! Students enjoyed making penguins with big white bellies and identifying different features of penguins such as where they live, what they look like, and how they stay warm! They’ll also be learning about birds, reptiles, and dinosaurs this month.
The first week of new clubs started and many of our students are enjoying being in new clubs with new friends. We are excited to welcome Kids In Tech and Skillerz Soccer at our site for the first time and happy to have some of our favorites returning. All of our students are having a fun time exploring! Each has started off extremely smoothly and it is fantastic to get some new faces engaged in what they love to do. In each club, students review the expectations and guidelines for a successful club session. it is exciting to see how much our students have learned and grown so far! We have continued to work hard to learn all the different ways we can be good friends, like sharing and talking out our problems. We have been talking about our feelings and learning to recognize the different zones of feelings.
Our 3rd - 7th graders are starting things off right on the week by buzzing their brains in Trivia, sports, high-tech, crafting, Board games, Volleyball, and more. Some of them will be continuing to gain rock climbing skills offsite at Metro Rock on Fridays. We’ve also got a new soccer club, Skillerz Soccer which is full of fun. In chess club, run by some of our AWESOME 6th and 7th graders, the students understand the chessboard and the pieces of the game and learn that patience is the key to chess. Meanwhile, basketball practice fosters teamwork and cooperation. We can’t wait to see the skills these students develop over the session! We are looking forward to seeing their skills develop over the session.
Friendly reminder: Please don’t forget to send your children to school and after school wearing weather-appropriate clothing. Even on those days when it is warmer than usual, it is still important for them to wear a jacket to school. Usually, by the time we go outside, the sun is setting and the warmth of the sun is gone.

Happy New year everyone! 2025 is off to a great start and we are looking forward to the rest of the year!
Ms. Emmaline's fiber art club has begun learning how to use a sewing machine while continuing their knitting projects. Knitting has really taken off at the kennedy, it really makes my heart full to see all the students working on their independent projects together!
Metro rock has had two great first sessions! They are learning to boulder and come back happy and tired from all their hard work!
Ms. Dinka’s Clubs,
It has been a great start in our clubs so far! Children are excited and ready to be learning, sharing ideas and experiences. They are enjoying mixed age groups and getting along well. Sign language club is showing a higher interest. We are the first step in the alphabet and sign our names along with a few basic words.
In Brain Booster club students are learning to create word searches on their preferred categories like food, books, names of their classmates and more.
Building with pipe cleaners and creating with origami has been a success not only because students are following my techniques but also learning from each other's skills.
Last week we created mini turtles. The turtles came out beautiful, students were proud of them. Great motor skills were demonstrated.
Animal club was focused on discussing student's favorite animals and why! Students made the first design on a blank paper before we worked on canvas.
Lastly, our Gym club has provided children the opportunity to create and have fun with games played as a team.
Ms. Emma’s Clubs
Craft and chat- So far during craft and chat students got to paint sun catchers and bring them home to hang in the sun where they can see the sunshine through. Also, students got to put a fellow classmates name out of a bowl and got to make their person a keychain or friendship bracelets and surprise that classmate at the end of clubs.
Movie critic- during this club students listen to the read aloud book of UP, then they watch some of the movie and found lots of similarities and differences between the two. We look forward to lots of more books and movies in the upcoming weeks and discussing what we like and dislike and what we would do differently if we directed the movie.
Ms. Laura’s Clubs
Kids in Laura’s clubs are excited for new activities. In Life Size Art, we have been planning and making posters for an indoor story walk. The librarians are very excited about it, too. In Free the Books, we have been making silhouettes in the cosmos projects, watching a book called Sulwe on screen and meditating to images of the universe. Kids Changing the World club kids have been choosing a method of earning money for their charity and what to make for it! Those in Kids Designing for Good are engaged in writing and illustrating their own book. Chill Out club kids relaxed on bean bags while meditating and made watercolors. Everyone is having a lot of fun in the new year!
