Counselor’s Corner
I hope everyone is having a happy February and staying warm through this cold winter!
At Community Schools, we warm our hearts in February by continuing to focus on our kindness and friendship skills. The capacity to build and maintain healthy social connections is an ability necessary for our future academic, emotional, and interpersonal success. Showing kindness reinforces this ability so we celebrate Random Acts of Kindness week from February 17th through the 21st. This year’s theme is “Spread Kindness Everywhere: One Small Act at a Time,” reminding us how even little gestures of kindness can have big and positive impacts on each other and our communities. Studies have shown that acts of kindness benefit not only the recipients of our generosity but also improve our own happiness and sense of well-being as the giver. Being kind has been scientifically proven to reduce our own stress, increase our stamina, and strengthen our self-esteem as well as encourage social connection and inclusivity. We hope everyone experiences kindness and spreads it everywhere, and we wish you all a kind and relaxing February vacation!

Happy February Argenziano families!! We are already halfway through Session 2 and February break is next week. This session is flying by! The students are having fun in their clubs and getting outside on the playground as much as possible even with the cold wet weather. The kids are having fun doing silly movement games in Improv, learning about different animals in Zoology, creating watercolors and paintings, learning & refreshing math skills in Magnificent Math, and working on teamwork in soccer. They have also really enjoyed one of our newer outside providers Buildwave club this year! Let’s check out what each grade level is up to..
Parents/Guardians:
With the colder temperatures, please ensure your children have jackets, gloves, hats, etc. and label all outdoor clothing and belongings. Items without name/label will be placed in lost and found.
Pre-K/K (Ms. Shruti):
Happy February! This past month, the pre-K students explored different weekly themes such as winter, love and Valentine’s, and friendship. We painted with food-dyed “popsicles,” decorated pipe cleaner snowflakes with beads, folded and cut out our own heart-shaped Valentine’s cards, and fortified our friendships by making personalized crowns and bracelets for each other! We hope everyone had a restful February break, and we look forward to seeing everyone again in March!
K-2nd grade (Ms. Etta, Ms. Lauren, Ms. Sana):
3rd-5th (Ms. Ana & Ms. Ileana):
Here in the Amazing Animators club, the students are learning ways to turn their drawings into moving picture form! Students will explore multiple ways to create their drawings into animations and got to explore this skill by creating flip book animations.

This month students have been focusing on learning about different kinds of animals. We learned about kangaroos, and crocodiles and students especially loved our fox craft! We also talked about a very specific group of animals: animals who hibernate! We talked about what it means to hibernate and how animals who sleep that long survive. We learned where animals hibernate and what they need to eat to prepare for winter. Mondays are one of our favorite days of the week because we get the gym to ourselves for a whole hour!
Mr. Mac (K-2nd)
Sports around the world: The students have continued to enjoy learning about new sports from all around the world. It is so fun to watch them try out a new sport! We have looked into sports from Ancient Greece like Gymnastics, and a familiar favorite from Europe, Soccer! They are all very eager to play and learn about more unique sports. This club has also been helping the kiddos practice good sportsmanship and the importance of sharing and taking turns.
Ms. Maria (K-2nd)
Comic Book Creations: The club's objective is to create a comic book. The students have been working hard to create characters and stories. We have already been able to staple some pages together. Their work has come a long way and at the end of the semester we are going to explore more about each of their stories when they do their presentations.
Time to Craft: So far in this club we have been able to create different crafts using different materials. They all seem to really enjoy the activities. I think their favorite one so far was the masks we made out of paper plates. They all got to pick their own designs and color the way they wanted.
Hero’s Power: As a gym club, this seems to always be their favorite. It always seems that they are never tired of running and playing games. In this class we play traditional sports as well as new games. The newer games we played so far that they liked the most seem to be handball. It’s not a very popular sport but because it’s almost like soccer they really seem to enjoy it.
Board games genius: They have been having a blast in this club. They enjoy playing the games among themselves. This week the game that stood out the most was Uno:No Mercy. A more difficult version of the card game Uno. Even though this new version is more complex they all seem to really enjoy playing together.
Learn to Paint: The students all love this club because they get to create different drawings using paint. Sometimes things get a little bit messy with paint spills but nothing that we can’t clean! They love to mix the colors to create new ones. We always leave the class with several colorful designs.
World Travelers Club: World travelers club is a hit! Every student comes in super excited to know where we are going next! We have continued our tour of Europe visiting Ireland, Italy, France, and Germany. We explore the various cultural differences and traditions from each country. We also take a dive into the cuisine, and a special treat from each country is provided from them to try if they wish! For example, they got to try croissants from France and pretzels from Germany! We will continue our travels to the Americas, Australia, and parts of Asia.
Movie Critics Club: The kindergarten, first and second graders are thoroughly enjoying viewing and discussing various movies. Our objective is to watch the movie and pay attention on a deeper level to learn about the message and lessons being taught in each movie. After Finding Nemo and Up, we have explored Inside out, learning about the importance of understanding and experiencing emotions, Soul which talked about the importance of staying true to yourself, and IF which discussed the importance of imagination, creativity, and staying in tune with your inner child!
Mr. T (3rd-6th)
Art with Fruit: The kids always love Art with Fruit - this is the only time when they're encouraged to play with their food! So far, we have had the opportunity to work with many different mediums (all fruit of course) including grapes, pears, watermelon, pineapple, and others. Students love creating their own projects and designs with the fruit, toothpicks, and spears, and then of course, eating them! It's a healthy and fun club that the students look forward to. Even though it's not a fruit, sometimes chocolate chips find their way onto the kids' plates as well...
Master of Games: Students always enjoy Master of Games! Our main activity is our favorite one - a different topic of jeopardy each week, where students come together into teams, create their own team name (which are hilarious), and then go head to head trying to get as many points as possible for their team by answering trivia questions, and trying to steal jeopardy questions from the other groups along the way... If students do not want to participate in the weekly jeopardy game, they are welcome to play a board or card game with each other and with other teachers and high school helpers. Monopoly Jr. is popular, and some of the students have really begun to dig into the complex strategy behind the classic game of chess!
Flag Football: The kids can't wait for flag football every Friday afternoon. The group is divided into the yellow and red teams, they put on their flag belts, and we try to gather as many teachers and high school helpers as possible to play a vigorous game of flag football. The flags allow students to play this great game indoors without tackling each other, as they just grab the flags instead of each other. We put some music on in the gym and then the kids play 'till they're exhausted!
Mr. Walters (3rd-6th)
Myths & Legends: Students have been enjoying hearing the fantastic myths and legends of ancient Greece. First, we explored the creation story, where mother earth and father sky joined to create the titans, the first beings on earth. We then discovered the pantheon of ancient Greek gods and goddesses as we know them today, including Zeus, Poseidon, Hades, Hera, Athena, Hermes, etc. and explored each god, what they hold dominion over, and what they represented and symbolized to the ancient Greeks. Since then, we have begun to dig into some of the stories of these characters including the story of Hades, Persephone and Demeter, and last week, the story of Perseus and Medusa. After hearing these stories, the students have enjoyed making sculptures out of clay and painting their versions of the characters from the stories!

February is the month of love – self love, gratitude and appreciation for those around us. It’s a short month, but our students are looking forward to February Camp! Meeting new peers, going on field trips and exploring new activities. Brown After-School has started 2024 with a bang! Students' engagement in their new clubs has been great to see!
Students in our K-2 group have been finding ways to stay active, creative and warm this month as the temperatures drop. Some activities and clubs we would like to highlight are:
Snowscape is a club where students get inspired by the world around them through winter themed activities! Students in this club have built and created many themed projects such as standalone snowmen, 3D winter houses, making puppets and their very own yeti! We call Mondays “meditation Monday’s” because of a club offered to K-2. In our mindful meditation club, students engage in breathing exercises, body scans and weekly gratitude circles. It’s a club that provides young students to build their understanding and awareness of their own emotions. Creative Collaboration is one of our unique clubs that brings all the K-2 together to make one giant art piece. The kiddos learn about patterns, various designs and work to create pieces that are different, but when they are together are harmonious. They’ve had challenges to incorporate various different mediums to make their individual pieces pop, including using crayons, markers, and colored pencils. The challenge is to keep working. It’s easy to color, but it's hard to look at a piece objectively and add to it and go further with a piece. The kids learn to work with each other and to add to their pieces by asking for feedback. Since this is a collaboration piece we’re all working together to make it a unique and inspiring piece of art.
This session, and next, we have a new club started by some of our fourth graders! They started an amazing new club that is for the K-2 students. It’s a crafty choice time club that students get to pick their next favorite activity to do next week. The 4th grade students developed this club with games and craft ideas in mind. Our littles are so excited to be in this club and we’re so happy the fourth graders are willing to create some fun new activities. We get to see the grades bond and become friends. We even have a few fourth and fifth graders who come down to help offer support to our kids doing crafts in their club time. It's another perfect way to get the kids involved and engaged in community building.
Session two is our shortest club session and before we know it, our final session will begin! Students will get to pick new clubs starting March 3rd. We cannot wait for the weather to start to warm up and the sun to stay a wee bit longer. We wish our students a happy February break and thank you to our Brown school families who are always supportive! Until next time!
Students in our 3-5 group have been enjoying spending extra time indoors, or out, with their friends. Some activities and clubs we would like to highlight are:
Some clubs that our 3-5 students have been enjoying are: Reader’s Theater and Danger Wizard. Reader’s Theater is a club where students collaborate to bring stories from books, plays, or scripts to life. It’s been so fun to see students stay in character, make props and act out with great commitment to their roles! Our 3-5 students are always eager to get to club on Wednesday’s because they enjoy their journeys, battles and victories in Danger Wizard.

Kindness is in the air! February has been filled with lots of kindness, care, and appreciation here at the East Afterschool Program. We also got to celebrate Black History Month by having our 3rd graders with Ms. Joanne participate in the Black History Month door challenge, through the process, students have been learning a lot of history that still impacts us today.
Our PreK-2nd has focused on spreading love and thoughtfulness during February by creating different crafts based on Valentine’s Day! This month, our students have been busy making Valentine’s Day crafts, filling our classrooms with colorful hearts, handmade cards, and festive decorations. Through these activities, they’re expressing kindness and appreciation for friends, teachers, and family. It’s wonderful to see their creativity shine as they spread joy throughout our community. We love celebrating these moments of friendship and fun! In their most recent project, All About Space club was able to make origami rocketships. CinemaKidz has been starting to film their project for the session and Buildwave remains the talk of the town with our students, facing challenges every week and working towards a prize.
Our teachers were able to get some kindness tickets to pass out during Kindness Week from February 10 - 14, students were being so kind and working hard towards receiving their 5 tickets for a prize during afterschool. Many of them got to know what working a double shift feels like! It was amazing to see how our students were working together and being attentive to one another in different forms, we saw some students helping each other play a game, and others were doing simple things like grabbing a pencil for their peers during homework time.
We didn't just celebrate the love and fun this month but also got a chance to celebrate Chinese New Year by creating some fun crafts such as a Chinese lantern.
As you may have noticed, we did receive some snow this month. The kids had a blast playing in it. Our older students decided to take some activities outside and did some sledding on the hill. At ESCS, we also always ensure to celebrate Black History Month in different and creative ways. Our older students have been hard at work completing their designs with Ms. Joanne for the door challenge! During February, each classroom is tasked with decorating their classroom door to emphasize the importance of this month, some doors have impactful quotes from MLK Jr. during his speech and others bring light to historical events that have occurred. Ms. Joanne has been an amazing advocate for students to participate in this challenge by decorating our very own afterschool door, on February 28, all staff and students will be able to vote on which classroom door has the best design to represent Black History Month! Their creativity has truly shined during the process.

The children play and have fun too – for example, in the gym with a friendship train. This year, with the cold weather and the snow, we are spending lots of time in the gym playing games like duck-duck-goose, four corners, fishy-fishy cross my ocean, and red light – green light. Aside from being fun, these games are packed with learning. Duck, duck, goose is a social game. Four corners and red light, green light teach how to be quiet and teach other elements of body control as well as leadership skills.
February is passing by. Before we blink, it will be Spring! Hooray!

We spent the beginning of February making hearts to decorate the cafeteria and valentines for our friends and families. There was a lot of love going around after school!
We also had a special visit from a group of Nichols College Cheerleaders! We got to see them perform skills and stunts and learn about college life. Shout out to Mr. George at the Kennedy for making this happen!!

Craft and chat-During craft and chat we have gotten to use different materials such as glitter glue, paint, and we even got to do some diamond painting to decorate pieces of wood however they wanted to create a fun decoration. We have also used peeler beads and got to have some fun creating fun and cute creations all while talking to each other about many different topics. During this week we also talked about the holiday Valentines Day coming up and we made a bear hugging a heart valentine which students could write or draw what they wanted on their heart for whoever they are planning on giving them too. We have had a lot of fun during craft and chat, and we look for too many more crafts to do in these next few weeks.
Movie critic- During Movie Critic, we have gotten to listen and watch many books and movies now, we have gotten to read and watch “The Lorax”, ”LILO and Stitch”, ”UP” and “The Good Dinosaur” which we got to watch all the movies too. Students have had fun listening to the books and trying to remember the book while watching part of the movie so they could point out all the simple and differences that they saw, which they have done a fantastic job at doing.
Ms. Dinka’s Clubs
With the challenge of the low and very cold temperatures and that little snow that embraced our city over the weekend students seem to be enjoying and participating at the clubs more than ever.
In our club Brain Booster after experiencing creating mazes and crosswords we are bringing on life little 3D shapes and since Valentine Day is approaching students had the best idea of using them as present boxes with a lollipop or a small treat, inside them.
Students cherish the work of each other as they are learning to recognize, identify and use more 3D shapes.

Pre-K/Kindergarten.
Our little explorers have been diving into exciting adventures in their clubs! At the parkour club, they have been full of energy, eagerly exploring movement and balance. Outside in the yard or inside the school, they have loved either challenging themselves with new ways to jump, climb, and navigate obstacles. In the Luv Ya Ma club, they were introduced to the fascinating world of surrealism, letting their imaginations run wild as they created unique and whimsical artwork. They were captivated by the unexpected and dreamlike elements they discovered!
Although all of our students are currently enjoying indoor dismissal, we can't wait to get back outside soon! Every week, our students continue to amaze us with their enthusiasm, creativity, and eagerness to learn. We are definitely so proud of their growth and can't wait to see where their curiosity takes them next.
1st Grade
After School with first graders this month is filled with excitement as the weather changes and they get into the real spirit of winter. They are eager to share what they’ve learned in class and often talk about their upcoming holiday plans. In between crafts, reading sessions, and games, they love exploring winter-themed activities like making snowflakes or drawing snowy scenes. Our students are especially enthusiastic about group games, building teamwork skills while having fun. It’s a joyful time for creativity and connection, making the end of the school day feel extra special.
2nd Grade
Our second graders have definitely been enjoying all of the clubs that the after school program is offering this session 2. Kickstart Kids was named as one of the second graders favorite clubs along with Pokemon Master and Smash Bros. At Kickstart Kids students have been learning and practicing why warming up is essential before playing a sport. Our second graders have also been working on their ball skills, learning how to receive and pass and in general how to play as a collective team. Kickstart Kids is just one of the clubs that our students are enjoying this month so please stick with us so you don't miss out on any exciting moments about this and the other clubs!

Our PreK students have been busy exploring, creating, and learning through fun activities! Wednesdays are extra special with our weekly Bingo games, where students practice number recognition and social skills in a fun and engaging way. In celebration of Valentine's Day, our little learners made beautiful friendship bracelets and had thoughtful conversations about kindness, love, and self-care. They shared ways to be a good friend and how to show love to themselves, from giving a big hug to saying kind words in the mirror. To get their bodies moving, they tried out Zumba—adding their own twist by playing musical instruments along with the beat!
