Counselor’s Corner
Hello everyone!
The holiday season can be a joyous time to celebrate connections, nurture peace around us, and embrace the goodwill of our communities. At the same time, we recognize that the hustle and bustle of this time of year can be challenging and overstimulating, causing feelings of anxiety and discomfort. Amid all of the holiday rush, please remember to take some time for yourselves and be mindful of you and your family’s needs for self-care. As you give support and kindness to others, don’t forget to practice it for yourselves as well! We hope you and your loved ones enjoy a peaceful and happy holiday season and we look forward to welcoming your kiddos back for an exciting and fun 2025!

Pre-K/K (Ms. Shruti):
Over the past few weeks, we have continued working on our fine motor skills and expressing our creativity! One week, we became deep-sea explorers by making watercolor rainbow fish, tracing and cutting our handprints to make colorful octopi, and learning paper-folding techniques to transform our hands into shark puppets! To reflect the changing seasons, we have made play-dough snow, and origami penguins, and have crossed the Arctic Ocean by hopping on ice caps. Happy holidays, and we look forward to seeing everyone in the new year!
K-2nd grade (Ms. Etta, Ms. Lauren, Ms. Sana):
Hello families! The children have been having a great time this month. We have been enjoying playing with friends outside, crafting, and exploring fun clubs. There has been a lot of origami, coloring and lanyard making along with games.
In “Yoga” we are learning new ways to move our bodies and engage our minds through poses, games, and meditations. In “Lego Building” we have been creating pieces that reflect a different theme each week, and the builds are so creative and imaginative! In “Crafty Kids” we have been making all kinds of crafts from beaded lizards to zipper stitch lanyards and from fuse (pearler) beads to paper ladybugs and bees. In “Fairytale Engineers” we have been reading storybooks and using our engineering brains to create parts of the fairytales. For example, we read Rapunzel and then tried to make the fastest paper helicopter (whirlybird) to help Rapunzel escape down her tall tower.
Overall the K-2nd graders are having so much fun this month and we are looking forward to all of the exciting after school adventures to come!
3rd-5th (Ms. Ana & Ms. Ileana):
In Crafty Kids the students were given the chance to work with paint. During our painting activity, students were able to paint a picture depicting a holiday that they celebrate during the winter season.
In Reading Corner, students are able to unwind and enjoy a good book. They're able to have open discussions at the end of clubs.
Parents/Guardians: Reminder: *NO AFTERSCHOOL on Friday 12/20*
With the colder temperatures, please ensure your children have jackets, gloves, hats, etc. and label all outdoor clothing and belongings. Items without name/label will be placed in lost and found. Any items remaining in the lost and found on 12/20 will be donated.

Hello families and a happy holiday season to you all!
2024 has been a year filled with new friends and families, new teachers and new opportunities for adventure every day. Here in after-school, we do our best to enjoy all the moments in our day whether they may be creating crafts, playing a giant game of soccer, building new friendships or trying a club we did not think we would like. In my short time back I have been so impressed by the amazing group of students you all have raised. We are wishing you all a restful winter break filled with time spent with the ones you love, see you all in 2025!
Mrs. Suri (PreK)
PreK has been hard at work learning their letters and what it means to be a kind friend. We focused on a winter theme this month! Students crafted and played the whole month through. We made name reindeer and focused on learning the letters in our names and where they go. We also made two snow globes! One was filled with snowballs that spelt our names and we got to choose the inside decorations for our second snowglobe. Some friends decorated a snowman and gingerbread man [playing together under snowflakes, while others decorated a gingerbread house and pine tree for a wintery wonderland scene. One of our favorite games we played helped us learn the names of different shapes! We matched shapes like hearts, pentagons, triangles, and more with the correct snowman in a fun game we could play over and over.
Ms. Maria (k-2)
Soccer Club: We have concluded the soccer club successfully and it continues to be one of the kid's favorite clubs. We not only used this club to get their energy out but also to learn patience. We have been able to end games we most of the students not being upset if they happen to lose the match. They have improved greatly since our first game. We all had a wonderful time in this club and I’m sure they all have learned a lot.
Gym Heroes: Gym class heroes is also one of the few class where the students can get all of the energy out. Dodgeball is one of the favorite sports and they always ask to play it again. We had the opportunity to play it again this week and they had such a great time. Their teamwork abilities have really improved since we first started this class and dodgeball is really a great game to end the club.
Lego Builder’s Club: Lego Builders is one of the most popular clubs around. The students always have so much fun. The assignment they liked the most was when they had to build a giant skyscraper. They were able to build two really tall structures. Each class they came up with several different designs and structures.
Mr. Mack (k-2)
Arts and Crafts: The students continue to explore their creative side by participating in various artistic activities. Recently we have been getting into the holiday spirit by crafting our very own snowperson family! This activity allowed the students to practice their cutting and gluing skills. The challenge was to create all the parts of the snowperson without using drawing utensils, just construction paper! In addition, the kindergarteners, first and second graders have of course been able to explore their creativity as well by drawing and crafting freely.
Storytelling: Our kindergarten, first, and second-grade friends have continued to be engaged in exploring the art of storytelling. We practiced creating stories as a group; we sat in a circle and generated our very own story by having each student add a new word to eventually have a complete story! The students loved the creativity and silliness! We have also been getting into the holiday spirit by reading various holiday stories.
Mr. T (3-6)
The 2024-2025 After-school Program at the Healey has been such a blast so far! I have had the distinct pleasure of getting to know and work with such an amazing, diverse, and creative group of 3rd-6th grade students. In my Gameshow Club, we finished off the session by continuing to complete the daily “Connections” and “Wordle” Puzzles. We also had the chance to play many versions of a special seasonal Jeopardy game, where students answered questions all about the winter and different holidays celebrated during that time. The random knowledge the students have never fails to amaze me! In Basketball Club, we played our competitive games of “Knockout” and kept working on our dribbling and shooting skills. Lastly, in “Mr. T Beast Mode” we played one of our favorites, “Castle Ball” which in addition to normal dodgeball, requires the kids to utilize their engineering skills. The team work vastly improved over the course of the session, and it was awesome to see students rooting for one another each week. As we head into the winter months, I look forward to my “Art with Fruit” club, where kids will learn all about healthy foods and get to make their own special creations with it. In years past, it has always been a super fun club for me to teach. Additionally, due to popular demand, I will be running a “Flag Football Club” and a “Master of Games” club. I hope everyone has a restful and enjoyable winter break and I cannot wait to see everyone in January!

"December is a time to reflect on the blessings of the past year and to embrace the opportunities of the coming one"
Happy December, After-School Families! It’s the most wonderful time of the year and we’re having some fun in our program as we wait for the holidays to arrive. First-session clubs are coming to an end, here are some of the highlights from the fall.
Our 3-5 bigs have also done a bit of working, learning, and growing together with their peers and teachers. Students have embarked on their adventures through collective storytelling, battling foes and carrying out daring rescues to brewing potions, learning about “magical”creatures in science-based activities to “chilling” with best friends through student-led activities. 3-5 has also begun to lead with intention this past school year in afterschool. We are learning that we are a part of the community at the Brown School so we’ve created “School Management” tasks where at the end of each night, students go around the school building and make sure everything is put in its proper place. This has begun to build valuable life skills like responsibility, respect for the environment and a sense of ownership over their choices and pride in keeping their community clean. Here’s some Session II Clubs that the students are looking forward to: Pokeology, Reader’s Theater, Danger Wizard, Comic Club and Science Experiments.
For the final week of the school year, afterschool has lots of fun activities planned! A whole week planned of winter-themed activities such as snowman-building contests, winter relays, hot cocoa, and The Polar Express watch party! We are also throwing a Winter Fest on Thursday, December 19th from 4:00 to 5:00 where families are welcome to join their students in viewing a year thus far slideshow and holiday craft making.
Brown School wishes all our afterschool friends and families the most wonderful winter holiday!

Season’s greetings from the East Somerville Community School after-school program! ESCS is happily celebrating the end of a fantastic first session!
Both the students and afterschool teachers can mutually agree that the clubs were tons of fun! Thank you to all those who joined us in our Winter Lights Celebration on December 10.
We had lots of engaging activities for families and students as well as some music. We also got to enjoy some treats as a community!
In this month’s edition, our students have continued to build and strengthen their communication and teamwork skills in their different clubs ranging from Karaoke Club, Buildwave, Lego Junior Builders, Sports Club, and Chess Wizzards along with many more clubs. They were able to wrap up Session 1 by showcasing projects they had worked on throughout the session and sharing them with their peers. Other clubs such as Outdoor Fun, Everything about Dinosaurs, and Tech Wizzards, had a conversation about what new skills they learned. We also want to thank our outside providers who came to our school and led some fun and exciting clubs for our students. We are happy to say that most if not all are joining us for Session 2 and we have some new outside providers such as Spanish Fun!
During the week before our winter break, students engaged in various activities with their teachers. Our younger students had some fun movement time in the gym and created some art activities to prepare for the break ahead of us. Older students created some Lego towers and tested their time management skills, enjoyed a day to watch a film, and discussed the theme/life lesson learned while also taking some time to relax with their peers.
We hope you all have a wonderful Winter Break. Please take this time to relax, rewind, and take on the New Year with enthusiasm and positivity!
We will welcome students and Session 2 on January 6th, 2025. Please note: Ms. Yolanda and Ms. Diana will also both be on vacation and will respond to any emails when we come back.

Season’s Greetings and Happy Winter!
Winter break is right around the corner and the after-school students at the Capuano are excited by the prospect of what is to come. We have been going to the gym more often this month because the weather is colder and it gets dark early, but when it’s warmer than usual and the sun is shining, we still try to get outside for some fresh air. Here at the Capuano, aside from playing, we have been doing puzzles, coloring, reading books about the month’s themes, and doing a variety of crafts.
The staff at the Capuano school would like to wish families a happy and healthy winter season. We hope everyone bundles up against the cold and enjoys the upcoming winter break with their family. We look forward to seeing what the new year brings us when it is time for school again in 2025.

I cannot believe how fast this first part of the year has gone by! It has been a pleasure to work with your students and watch them grow, create, learn, and laugh!
Thank you for all your patience and kindness as I am learning and growing in Alison's role while she is on Maternity leave!
Ms. Laura,
This month Laura's clubs have had a great time! Kids in Printmaking and Symbols have been making textile designs by repeating patterns with their thumbprints. They have also used fabric paint to make prints on cotton totes. Science is Magic club kids have been drawing and writing in their magical books all session and just finished them! They did fun experiments and found out that plants can be recognized at different times of year when they look very different! Kawaii kids created cute miniature scrolls to hang and celebrate the seasons. Carbon Footprint club made adorable finger puppets and beautiful art frames from cardboard and magazines. Those in Astronomy, Math and Meaning found out about the amazing path of Earth around the sun, read about our solar system and made their own exoplanets! Everyone had a great session with many unique creations to bring home
Ms. Emma
Random fun-During this club students have gotten to do a lot of fun activities , we have done activities based on what they wanted to do, and activities based on the season we were in. Students have gotten to color cut and build turkeys full of things they are grateful for. Students have made friendship bracelets and have gotten to color, cut and put together a snowman. I have enjoyed watching them have fun in this club and always asking what we are doing next week. Students have worked together and gotten to talk while they do their activities during this club, and I look forward to teaching this club in the future.
Arts and crafts- students have done a lot of fun and different arts and crafts during this session of clubs, they have gotten to do crafts based on what session we are in and what they suggested we do in the first week of clubs back in September. Students have made their own puzzles out of popsicle sticks by drawing on one side then mixing them around to try and put together, they even challenge each other to solve their puzzles. We have also colored cut and put together turkeys for fall, and we got to come up with and color a design on a winter mitten. Students had a lot of fun making each other laugh and goofing around and talking to each other while they were doing their art activities.
Lego Club- Students got to build a lot of fun and different things each week during this club such as, building and constructing a sturdy bridge together, they got to build a maze for me to complete, and they also all decided together that they wanted to make different obstacle courses they I had to try and get through.
Beading club- During beading club students have gotten to use their imagination to come up with how they wanted to make their beads, each week students got a task such as, “this week you have to make your favorite animal” so they got to make their favorite animal but they could either decide if they wanted to make it realistic or how they wanted it but I had to be able to tell what it was, they did an amazing job at following direction and doing what was asked. They got to make a turkey, whatever they wanted but it had to be winter related, and they also got a couple of days where they could have a free day and make whatever they wanted.
Movie critic- During this club we have read and watched a lot of books and movies such as, Bambi, Cars, Inside Out, Little Bear, The Berenstein Bears, Bolt, Ratatouille and The Lion King. Students did an excellent Job at finding and discussing similarities and differences they saw between the books and movies. Students also did a great job discussing what they would have done differently in the movies if they were the director of the movies.
Ms. Silvana
End of session 1 came faster than we thought and children grow so much quicker in improving the learning skills and assimilating the abilities like create, focus, explore and expand. At Big minds little hands students learned sewing a button, a pocket, crochet and knitting too. You probably have been asked to provide some yarn. The last hour students worked on learning to tie a perfect bow. Right before Holidays this comes very handy. I just have a big Thank you for all of them ! I am so proud of them and their little hands.
At Around the world I saw the students engaging and working hard on learning Sign language and some words in Spanish , Italian and German. Some even laughed with the pronunciation of the words but we ended this club with so much joy. I have seen students communicate in distance with each other using sign language. It was the best feeling seeing them using sign language. 🤟
At the magic world of whales 🐳 students learned the types of whales and enjoyed reading stories and fun facts about these magic creatures. We did drawings and even little sculptures of whales. Children tested their memory on word searches where they were able to spot different names of whales

Hello Families!
December is finally here!! Can you believe it? Our students really enjoyed the month of November and all the magical things in it but they were more than ready to see what December has for them. All the interesting cultural celebrations, the great time we get to spend with our loved ones and the well-deserved breaks are some of the reasons this month is one of the most special for our students. We have some fantastic activities lined up to showcase in this month's newsletter. From cozy crafts to a New Year's Eve party so please continue reading so you don't miss out on all the fun of the after school program!
Pre-K/Kindergarten
Our amazing Pre-K and Kindergarten students are shining bright! They won a trophy for their participation in the Chess Wizards club, definitely something to be proud of. The students also had a blast learning Spanish with songs and making piñatas at our end-of-year party at the Spanish is Fun club. Lastly, our little shining stars have been enjoying some cozy indoor recess during this cold winter season. Big smiles, big accomplishments, and endless fun ways to hang out, little stars!
2nd Grade
Our second graders have been letting their imaginations run wild in the Crafty Kidz club with lots of art and crafts activities. While in the Myths and Monsters club, students have been discussing and exploring myths such as Bigfoot. They had the opportunity to learn about this myth and decide whether or not they believe in it as well as to create their own Bigfoot, definitely something to remember forever!
1st Grade
This past month at after-school for first grade has been a fantastic blend of fun and learning! Little scientists have sparked curiosity with exciting experiments, while Animal Kingdom gives students the chance to explore the wonders of wildlife. Build battle encourages creativity and teamwork. Hello and Happy Holidays!
As the year (and decent fall weather) comes to an end we remember all of the fun times, warm memories, and overall growth of the children here at our Community Schools after-school program this school year. Congratulations to Josh on the newest addition to his family, baby Easton! We also welcome Yesenia, also known as Ms. Yes, who will be joining and supporting us while Josh is away. We miss you Josh and look forward to seeing you next year! This past month has been full of exciting learning discoveries we are thrilled to share with you.
As we say goodbye to the cool Fall and welcome the brisk Winter, Pre-k learned about the change of seasons and how it can impact the weather. They enjoyed reading, “Snow is Falling,” by Franklyn M. Branly, and “Bad Kitten does not like the Snow,” by Nick Bruel, where they practiced awareness of print, letter sounds and the relationship between letters and sounds. They even had the chance to engage in sensory play using real , fresh and clean, snow that Ms. Jane collected! The Pre-k group also enjoyed using their creative and artistic skills to decorate Holiday/Pine trees and brushed up on STEM as they reviewed the science behind Blizzards.
The Kindergarten’s also had a busy month in which they enhanced cognitive, creative, and language skills. The children were encouraged to design their own communities/cities using Legos for Little Big Town Club with Mr. Rodrigo. Their designs and creations did not fall short of being impressive! For Bug's Life Club they were able to explore their imaginations during the build a dragon fly activity. The children were proud and excited to have been able to create such realistic looking insects- they even flew like real Dragonflies! One of the main highlights for the Kindergarteners this past month was completing all of their books. They even made posters that depicted their favorite parts. Congratulations on your accomplishment Kindergarten!
The 3d-6th graders had a fun and enriched packed month as well! In Globe Trotters Club, Mr. Teddy shared his cultural roots, language and traditions from Bulgaria. The children were excited to learn the Bulgarian dance , Horo, and did not hesitate to show off their skills when invited to dance along. They picked up the moves rather quickly! They especially enjoyed sharing the different countries their families are from and unique cultural traditions they share. It was nice to learn about how diverse the group is. Being a competitive and bright group, naturally they had a blast during Animal Jeopardy. The trivia quizzed their knowledge and memory of different animals from around the world. Let’s just say they know their stuff(they beat a grownup !). Shoutout to the Book Brigade Club who not only finished the book, Matilda, but did an exceptional job re-enacting a chapter. Their performance was quite impressive as they each had different roles, lines and characters. They had fun getting into character and putting on a show for their peers. They deserve a standing ovation!
We look forward to coming together again next year and wish you and your family warm and happy holidays and a very happy new year!
