Leadership & Service is a freshman-level course designed to help students develop the skills needed to become effective leaders, responsible team members, and active contributors to their school and community.
Throughout the semester, students will learn about leadership traits and styles, communication, active listening, teamwork, conflict resolution, ethics, integrity, problem-solving, and service. Students will have opportunities to practice leadership skills through hands-on activities, discussions, scenarios, reflection, and a semester service-learning project.
The goal of this course is not simply to teach students how to be "the leader." Students will learn that leadership can happen in many different ways and that effective leaders listen, communicate, collaborate, make responsible decisions, solve problems, and serve others.
Course Objectives
By the end of the semester, students will be able to:
Identify characteristics and skills of effective leaders.
Recognize their own strengths, values, and areas for growth.
Explain different leadership styles and when they may be effective.
Demonstrate effective verbal and nonverbal communication.
Practice active listening and thoughtful questioning.
Work effectively as part of a team.
Identify and respond appropriately to conflict.
Use problem-solving and decision-making skills.
Demonstrate ethical behavior and personal integrity.
Identify needs within the school and community.
Plan and complete a service-learning project.
Reflect on their leadership growth and service experiences.
