School counselors provide short term counseling to help students overcome acute issues having an impact on their school performance. We do not diagnose, provide medicine management or provide long term therapy. If your student would benefit from long term counseling see a school counselor for referral information and help.

Funded through Brookings Area United Way both Avera Behavioral Health of Brookings and Brookings Behavioral Health and Wellness provide support school linked behavioral health services throughout Brookings County. United Way funding can decrease financial barriers for caregivers wanting to access services for their learner and/or family. At MMS, we offer our counseling space for agency counselors from both entities (BBH and Avera) to provide mental health counseling to MMS students by scheduled appointment. A behavioral health therapist will work with you to identify your student and family’s needs and ensure you have access to the resources and supports you deserve.
If your student does not prefer school based sessions, both BBH and Avera also offer in office sessions at their location(s) in Brookings.

If your student is referred by their school counselor for mental health counseling and you decide to contact either entity above on your own (skipping steps 4 and 5 above), be sure to mention that your child is a MMS student who was referred for services by their MMS school counselor.
