The ACT is a standardized exam that measures academic readiness for college. Four tests are taken covering English, Math, Reading, and the optional Science. There is also an optional Writing portion of the exam.
Beginning in the spring of 2026, all South Dakota juniors will take the test, as it will replace the previously required state assessment (Smarter Balance) at the high school level. The ACT will be administered as part of the school day. Seniors can take the ACT the same day as the juniors, but will be required to pay for the exam. (~$58)
The ACT is not required for the class of 2026 seniors, but they are highly encouraged to take it, if planning on attending a 4-year institution after graduation.
