Here is a list of frequently asked questions from parents and students. If you can't find the answer to your question, please contact any of the 6th grade teachers; we are happy to help!
Can we access online work at home?
Yes! You can! Follow the instructions on this document to login to your child's account at home. From here, you can access Clever, Google Classroom, Email, Online Textbooks, and more!
Also, most of our online work can be access through student Clever accounts. There are more detailed instructions in each of our Planbooks!
Does my child have a textbook?
Math: Each student has their own workbook they can take home along with an ebook that can be found on Clever. Click on the Savvas EasyBridge link. Math composition notebooks are typically kept in the classroom, but students can take them home if necessary.
Science: Students have a workbook that serves as a textbook. They can bring this home for any assignments or to supplement their learning. Students will also have access to the on-line content and resources. Students will be able to access these as needed through Clever and when they are assigned in Google Classroom.
Reading: Students can check out a copy of the English text book at any time. I give students a paper copy of almost every single text we read, notes, and handouts. I'll also post a PDF copy of these things on Planbook on the day we do them. If nothing else works, you're welcome to email me for a copy of anything!
Social Studies: Students can access the online textbook through Clever. Click on McGraw Hill icon. A student can check out a textbook if needed.
Writing: Students do not have separate writing textbooks. We oftentimes use No Red Ink or Savvas for online assignments. This is also a class that will require submissions in Google Classroom (it's very user-friendly for writing assignments).
Where can I see my child's grades?
Go to the Meade School District website, click Infinite Campus, sign in, click the "grades" tab. To see each class's grades broken down, click into the class.
If you don't have a username or password, email jenna.whitman@k12.sd.us or megan.burgner@k12.sd.us. Either of those ladies will help you get a username and password.
What is the late work policy?
Most assignments will have a predetermined and communicated due date. However, in sixth grade we understand that the workload increases a bit, expectations are slightly higher, and kids need time to adjust. For these reasons, we are typically pretty flexible with late work. We ask that students get work turned in as quickly as possible, but we do accept submissions up to 2 weeks past the original due date. After that, grades are frozen and cannot be remedied.
At times, there will be specific hard deadlines for certain projects. We will make sure to communicate those deadlines in the comments of the grading portal.
If my child is absent, what can I do to help him/her stay caught up on work?
Please use the Planbook links on each of our webpages to see what your child has missed in class that day. It would also be a good idea to encourage your child to check in with the teacher(s) to see if there's anything else that needs to be completed. Students who are absent will receive extended deadlines on graded assignments. Absences should also not effect eligibility for sports or activities.
STUDENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE for all missed work and are expected to make up things that were missed when absent. We highly encourage students to advocate for themselves and communicate with their teachers about missing work, late work or absences.
What is the eligibility policy for my 6th grade student-athlete?
Students must be passing all of their classes in order to participate in school-sponsored sports. Each Monday morning, administrators will process an eligibility report and communicate with teachers and coaches about ineligible students.
If your child is ineligible, he/she cannot participate in games for the following 7 days. Ineligible students are still expected to participate in practices and may attend matches, but may not sit on the bench/sidelines with the team.
All teachers will work hard to have grades updated in a timely fashion so that the Eligibility Report is accurate on Monday mornings.
What is the tardy policy for sixth grade?
Tardies 1-3: "free" - no consequences
Tardies 4-10: one lunch detention for each tardy 4-10
Tardies 11+: one day of ISS for each additional tardy
Tardy counts reset each quarter
In sixth grade, we count students tardy if they are late to class or if they show up without all of their necessary supplies and need to leave the room to get the supplies
What happens when my child misuses his/her iPad at school?
Students are given "Strikes" for misuse of their devices. Each strike comes with consequences that increase in severity.
Strike 1 - verbal warning
Strike 2 - verbal warning & contact home
Strike 3 - verbal warning, contact home, device may be required to stay at school (based on teacher discretion)
Strike 4 - verbal warning, contact home, device will be required to stay at school, we will ask to meet with parents and student to create a plan for success (admin may be invited to attend)
Can my child have his/her phone at school?
Our school policy states that call phones are not to be used between 7:45 and 2:55 ("bell to bell"). If you need to contact your child during the day, you may email him/her or call the school and have a message delivered. Also, if your child is contacting you on his/her cell phone during the school day, please encourage him/her to use the office phone, a classroom phone, or an email for communication.
If I have an issue or concern, what is the first step to resolving this issue?
The first step is to email or call your child's teacher to discuss your concerns. It may also help to involve your child's advisory/study hall/homeroom teacher so that there are several points of communication for both of you! Please feel free to reach out via email or call us and the office managers can transfer your call. Our planning hour is typically from 1:20-2:00 each day.
