High school students may take accredited correspondence, distance, or virtual courses or complete exams (CBE) to earn credit toward graduation. Students may choose to take correspondence, distance and virtual courses outside the school day at their own expense. For details on LISD policies regarding Correspondence, Distance and Virtual Courses, please refer to the LISD Course Catalog
How To Earn Credit
For Credit by Exam, students must score 80 percent or higher for each semester exam. For courses with two semester exams, the student must score 80 percent on both semester exams and not an average of 80 percent. Grades are added to the transcript but will be excluded from the student’s high school grade point average (GPA). Upon receiving a passing score on a Credit By Exam, students will be scheduled in the appropriate next level at the beginning of the following school year.
For Correspondence Coursework, students must score 70 percent or higher for each semester average. For courses with two semesters, the student must score 70 percent or higher for both semester averages and not an average of 70 percent. Grades are added to the transcript but will be excluded from the student’s high school grade point average (GPA). The campus will notify parents and students upon receiving exam results. Upon receiving a passing score on a Correspondence Coursework, students will be scheduled in the appropriate next level at the beginning of the following school year.
For students seeking to earn credit due to failed prior instruction, students must score 70 percent or higher for credit by exam or correspondence coursework, for each semester. Grades are added to the transcript but will be excluded from the student’s high school grade point average (GPA) and will not replace the existing failed semester average. To earn 1.0 credits for a full year course students must complete both semesters of that course (A and B).
GPA
For grades earned through University of Texas High School or Texas Tech University ISD K-12, grades are added to the transcript but will be excluded from the student’s high school grade point average (GPA). Grades earned through approved district courses completed via TxVSN and Proximity Learning will be calculated in GPA. All other grades earned through correspondence, distance and virtual courses are not included in the calculation of grade point average (GPA) and rank.
Seniors
Leander ISD recommends that any correspondence, distance, or virtual courses required for graduation are completed by the end of the fall semester of a student’s senior year. All correspondence, distance or virtual courses required for graduation must be completed, and the final grade recorded, at least 30 days prior to graduation in order to participate in graduation ceremonies.
Student-Athletes
Student athletes who are considering correspondence, distance or virtual courses must check with the NCAA to inquire if a course of this type is acceptable as part of the NCAA core curriculum requirements. Please visit the NCAA website www.eligibilitycenter.org or 1-877-262-1492.
All transcripts/grade reports for courses completed over the summer must be submitted to the LHS Counseling Office by July 31 in order for students to modify their following school year schedule.
