Next time you stroll through Ala Moana Shopping Center, be sure to stop at the courtyard in front of Bloomingdale's. There you can't miss the 6 foot, twelve hundred pound pumpkin bronze sculpture covered in polka dots created by Japanese artist, Yayoi Kusama. The symbolism of the "kabocha" in Kusama’s art represents a positive and comforting piece of her troubled childhood in Matsumoto, Japan. As a young girl, Kusama spent hours drawing pumpkins. She reported that art was her daily medicine. Check out what WMS students did after they were inspired by her whimsical artwork. It will make you smile!
