Introductory students were introduced to two artists, Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee. Kandinsky was a Russian-born artist, Paul Klee was a Swiss-born German artist. They were some of the first creators of pure abstraction in modern painting. Their styles were influenced by movements in art that included expressionism, cubism, and surrealism. They both taught at the Bauhaus school of art, design and architecture in Germany.
Advanced students learned about Jasper Johns, American painter, printmaker, and sculptor. He is well known for hid depiction of the American flag and symbolic number paintings. Students used number and letter templates to create abstract expressionism images.
