WHAT is a Letter of Recommendation (LOR): Letters of recommendation are an integral part of the college application and acceptance process. A letter of recommendation for college admission is a short document typically written by a teacher, counselor, or mentor highlighting your strengths and potential contributions to a school.
WHEN to ask: The sooner the better! We like to say 2 weeks minimum. If it's a person who might be writing many letters for students you should give them at least one month before your deadline. Please note: if a recommender requests a resume or brag sheet you should begin the two week minimum timeline AFTER you submit the documents to them.
WHO to ask: If the college/organization doesn't specify who to ask, core subject teachers (english, math, science, or social studies) are good options. If you're considering a specific major, you might consider getting a recommendation from a teacher of a related subject. Junior year teachers are recommended but any teacher who know you well should do. Teachers too far in the past are not recommended as they cannot share current perspectives about you. Teacher recommenders who also know you outside of the classroom can be helpful.
WHY you need a LOR: A well written LOR can help your application stand out, especially when it highlights your skills, accomplishments, and positive attitude toward education. If you don't already have a teacher or counselor who knows you well enough to write you a glowing recommendation start talking with some of them today! Work on a brag sheet or resume that showcases some of your best achievements that you can share with them.
HOW to ask for a LOR:
Ask your recommender in person: You might feel a bit awkward or shy about it, BUT asking your recommender in-person demonstrates respect and thoughtfulness.
Ask them kindly and provide information for your letter: Give them any requested information about yourself as well as deadlines and instructions on submitting the letter. If they need to mail something out, bring them a stamped and addressed envelope. Let them know if there is a specific topic you want them to write about or reason you specifically chose them. IF they agree, check in with them often to talk story and continue to build your relationship.
Finally, send them a thank you card: While writing a recommendation for a student is usually viewed as a positive, please remember that it is not required. Sending a note of gratitude to your recommenders goes a long way.
