FAFSA

Updated as of 1/12/24

Aloha Students & Families,

Seniors in the Class of 2024 can apply for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)!  Kapolei High School will be offering free workshops in the spring semester to help students and families submit their applications.  If you would like to attend an in person workshop, please contact Mr. Okoji at 808-305-8117 or myles.okoji@k12.hi.us to sign up for an appointment. Students may also stop by the College & Career Center to make an appointment.  There is also a virtual option for you to complete your FAFSA and you must register directly at collegeiswithinreachhawaii.com (see above flyer).

Before attending a workshop, please look over the information on this page.  It will help expedite the process if you have an account set up and all of your financial information readily available.

Parents/Guardians,

If you are attending an in person workshop:

Students/Parents/Guardians,

Here are four simple steps to help you get started and guide you throughout the application process:

1. Start gathering all of your personal information (e.g. social security or Green Card number) and have an e-mail account that you check regularly. Students, DO NOT use your school e-mail address. This account will be deleted once you graduate.  Students and parents will use tax information from two years prior to enrolling. So if you are a senior and will start college in Fall 2024, you will use your tax information from 2022.

2. Create an FSA ID (account).  Both the student and parent should create an account. An account is linked to your social security/Green card number. DO NOT try to create multiple accounts with the same number.  This will lock your account and you will have to call FAFSA to unlock it.  Click here to create an account (this can be done at any time). If both parents are married AND file joint tax returns, only one parent needs to create an account.  If parents are divorced, which parent provides the "greater support" to the child.  This is the parent who should create an account.  Not sure which parent should create an account?  What if I am not the biological parent?  Click here to learn more.  If you have a special circumstance, please contact Mr. Okoji if you need help.

3. Complete the application.  Mark all schools in your application that you would like to send your FAFSA information to. You can initially list up to 20 schools in your account and may add/change your schools later.  Click here to start your FAFSA application.  Be sure to select the  "2024-2025" application.  If you are coming to the workshop, we will help you start your application.

4. After you have been accepted to your college, your financial aid award letter will soon follow. Once received, review it. You may contact the Financial Aid Office if you have any questions or need clarification.

How to read your Financial Aid Package

Once you submit your FAFSA application, the Federal Government will determine your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) based on your taxes and assets.  Your EFC is the amount that the government determines you can contribute to your child's education. Every school that you get accepted to will then determine a financial aid package based on your EFC. Here are some examples of different financial aid packages to four schools.
