The Hawaiʻi Department of Education (HIDOE) is committed to implementing evidence-based practices that support students with diverse learning and behavioral needs. Practical Functional Assessment (PFA) and Skills-Based Treatment (SBT) provide a compassionate, effective approach to understanding and addressing challenging behaviors, helping students develop essential communication, coping, and life skills.
Overview of PFA/SBT
PFA is a structured assessment process that identifies the underlying causes of challenging behavior in a way that prioritizes student dignity and safety. Based on these findings, SBT is then implemented to systematically teach students alternative, socially appropriate behaviors in a reinforcing and supportive environment. This approach is rooted in positive reinforcement, functional communication, and individualized skill-building to help students succeed across school and community settings.
