Qualifications for becoming a Hawaii Online Courses (HOC) instructor are as listed:

1. State of Hawaii resident

2. State of Hawaii teacher license

3. HQ in course content area and grade level

4. Classroom experience in teaching the course (desired but not required)

5. Successful completion of the Online Teaching Level 1 (PDE3 #CT186400) or Connect! (PDE3 #CT178661) course AND the Online Teaching Level 2 (PDE3 #PD186458) course. Visit the Project Inspire website for course and registration information.

In general, Instructor expectations include:

• Spending, on the average, between 10-14 hours a week on course instruction.

• Logging into course regularly (5 days per week) to perform tasks for effective online instruction.

• Responding to students within 48 hours.

• Grading assignments promptly.

• Attending online biannual teacher meetings (one held in the summer) and participating in monthly online professional learning community sessions/events.

• Applying best practices for effective online instruction

  • Providing clear guidelines and policies regarding student-instructor communication

  • Promoting student-student cooperation and collaboration

  • Promoting active learning

  • Providing clear expectations

  • Providing prompt, specific and individualized feedback to promote understanding

  • Providing deadlines

  • Setting high expectations

  • Providing multiple forms of learning (written, aural, visual, manipulative, etc.)
