Public education is a cornerstone of democracy and a fundamental pathway to equality and opportunity. Schools are not just places of learning but essential community institutions that promote social mobility and civic engagement. However, educators and staff are increasingly burdened by systemic challenges, including underfunding, social tensions, and a growing mental health crisis among students and staff alike. By focusing on public education, the Lakes Area Justice Table addresses the need to strengthen this vital institution and ensure that teachers, staff, and students are supported and empowered.
We recognize that a robust educational system benefits students and the entire community. We cultivate informed, engaged citizens who can contribute to a more just and equitable society through public education. By organizing community-based support for educators, we aim to foster a culture of gratitude and solidarity that uplifts those who shape the next generation.
Show a Little Love
A Campaign Supporting Public Education
Public Education is a central element of our democracy and a vital component of a healthy and vibrant community. Our public educators and staff are public servants dedicated to the education and welfare of our children. This continues to be a difficult time for public education, and our teachers and staff are profoundly impacted. We think it is time to show them a little love. This ongoing campaign was launched on Valentine's Day, 2024, with this 1/2 page ad in the Dispatch.
Gratitude Project
Celebrating Schools and Teachers
Fall 2024, the Justice Table partnered with ISD181 to launch the Gratitude Project, a multi-part initiative designed to highlight the importance of public education through the voices of those who experience it every day—students and teachers.
Through the "Why I Love My School" initiative, students from kindergarten through eighth grade were invited to express their gratitude for their school through poetry, prose, or art. Their heartfelt submissions—ranging from touching poems about supportive teachers to vibrant illustrations of playground memories—offered a window into what makes their school experience special.
At the same time, the "Why I Love to Teach" initiative provided educators with a platform to share their passion for teaching. Teachers reflected on the moments that inspire them, the relationships that sustain them, and the deep sense of purpose that drives them. Their words serve as a testament to the dedication, joy, and resilience that define the teaching profession.
At the heart of education, our dedicated public school teachers and staff!
Thank you for educating, inspiring and enriching our community.
HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!

The Latin word gratus, meaning “thankful” or “pleasing,” gives us the modern word “gratitude.” Expressing gratitude not only brings joy but also strengthens the bonds we share. The Gratitude Project brings this sentiment to life by fostering appreciation for both students and teachers, creating a collective gift for the entire community.
A heartfelt thank you to the Brainerd Dispatch for sharing these reflections, to the teachers who shared their love of teaching, and to the children who expressed their joy in learning. To all who take a moment to view and reflect on these works: thank you. May the spirit of gratitude continue to grow and inspire us all.
