In today’s increasingly diverse world, embracing the richness of different cultures, perspectives, and experiences is essential. By affirming diversity and inclusion, we foster an environment where all individuals are valued, respected, and invited to contribute to community life. We are committed to building a community where every voice is heard, and every person can thrive.
One key initiative under this priority is creating an annual Indigenous Peoples Day event. This event serves as a platform for acknowledging and honoring the history, culture, and contributions of Indigenous peoples while also addressing the historical injustices they have faced.
In 2024 we hosted our second Indigenous Peoples Day Celebration and have committed to making this an annual event, grounded in these principles.
Correcting Historical Injustices: Acknowledge and challenge the harmful legacies of colonization, such as the erasure of Indigenous peoples' histories, cultures, and contributions. It shifts the narrative from celebrating colonial conquest to recognizing the resilience and survival of Native communities.
Honoring Indigenous Cultures and Contributions: Provides an opportunity to celebrate the diversity, rich traditions, and unique contributions of Indigenous peoples to society, highlighting their ongoing role in shaping the social, cultural, and environmental fabric of nations.
Raising Awareness and Education: Serves as an educational platform, raising awareness about the historical and contemporary struggles Indigenous communities face, including land rights, sovereignty, and systemic injustices. It promotes understanding and reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.
Promoting Healing and Reconciliation: Foster dialogue and promote healing for Indigenous communities. It helps create a space for truth-telling, restorative justice, and building bridges between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.
Supporting Indigenous Rights and Sovereignty: Reinforces the importance of respecting Indigenous rights, including self-determination, land preservation, and cultural protection. It encourages ongoing advocacy for justice and equity for Indigenous communities.
Shaping a More Inclusive Future: Contributes to the broader effort of creating a more inclusive society by recognizing the value of Indigenous perspectives in addressing contemporary issues like environmental stewardship, social justice, and sustainable living.
