Celebrating Lunar New Year Through Spring Couplets and Cultural Exchange

Activity Overview

In February, during the Lunar New Year season, students from Zhongxiao Elementary School took part in a meaningful cultural and language activity designed to celebrate the new year while strengthening international friendship. The activity also aimed to deepen the cultural exchange between Zhongxiao Elementary School and Lafayette Elementary School.

Spring Couplets and Doufang Creation

To begin the celebration, students designed traditional Chinese Spring Couplets (春聯) and Doufang (斗方). These are important cultural decorations used during Lunar New Year to express good wishes, happiness, and prosperity for the coming year.

Each student carefully created their own couplets by writing festive phrases and New Year blessings. Many students included wishes for good health, success in studies, happiness for their families, and peace in the new year. Through this creative process, students not only practiced traditional cultural arts but also learned the meaning behind these important customs.

Connecting Culture with English Learning

After completing their Spring Couplets and Doufangs, students took the next step by creating English videos. In these videos, they introduced their artwork and explained the meanings behind the words they had written.

They also shared their personal wishes for the new year in English, practicing their speaking skills in a real and meaningful context. This helped students build confidence in using English while expressing their own thoughts and cultural traditions.

Strengthening International Friendship

This activity was not only about art and language learning, but also about building connections. It was designed to strengthen the relationship between Zhongxiao Elementary School and Lafayette Elementary School. By sharing their Spring Couplets and English videos, students were able to introduce Taiwanese Lunar New Year traditions to their international peers. At the same time, they practiced communication skills that help promote understanding and friendship across cultures.
