CvHS CTE Apprenticeship Asynchronous Course
Students who participate in apprenticeships or pre-apprenticeships through the North Carolina Department of Commerce can also earn CTE credit while they earn hours and experience toward an adult apprenticeship leading to a completed journeyman certificate.
A youth apprenticeship is defined by NC Apprenticeship as an industry driven education and career training program based on recognized industry standards. It is a partnership among business, industry, education, government, parents, and youth apprentices.
Eligibility and Credit:
Eligibility to participate in a youth apprenticeship is determined by the apprenticeship host
Students must demonstrate 120 hours of work and/or classroom experience for academic credit
Students may earn 1 academic credit per semester during their senior year, with a maximum of 2 credits for the academic year

The 2025-26 Applicaton is Due Electronically to Mrs. Waller by 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 11, 2025 as the first class meets on Saturday, September 13, 2025. There are only two built-in make-up days so your attendance is required at all Satruday classes for successful completion of the course.
Completing the program will provide participants with the following benefits:

OSHA 10, First Aid, and CPR certifications
Opportunity to interview for a limited number of internships with a Johnston County public power utility in Summer 2025, funded by JCI.
Opportunity to learn from two industry experts and experienced instructors: Jon O’Boyle, Instructor for Nash Community College Electric Line Construction Program and George Shook, Electric Superintendent for the Town of Selma and former instructor for Nash Community College Electric Line Construction Program
The program content will be delivered over 10 Saturdays between September 2025 and May 2026. The program includes some out of class assignments and may incorporate some job shadowing experiences at one of the sponsoring utilities (town schedules permitting). Refer to the Appendix for the 2025-26 course schedule. Note that dates, topics, and time frames may be subject to change at the instructors’ discretion. Students will be provided with ample notice of any changes that impact scheduled course dates.
Participant Eligibility:
The Johnston County Electric Line Worker Pre-Apprenticeship Program is open to all students who meet the following criteria:
Will be a high school senior during the 2025-26 school year
Attending high school in Johnston County (public, charter, private, or homeschool)
Committed to participating in all scheduled sessions if selected (make up opportunities can be made available for approved circumstances outside of the student’s control)

Completed applications should be emailed to Mrs. Waller (maryoliveawaller@johnston.k12.nc.us) by 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 11, 2025. All applications must be submitted electronically via email.

The Caterpillar Assembly Pre-Apprenticeship Program is an 18-month program in Clayton, N.C. that prepares high school students for employment in a manufacturing assembly environment.
High school students accepted into the assembly pre-apprenticeship program will take free manufacturing-related classes at Johnston Community College (10 credit hours) as well as receive paid, on-the-job training and work experience at Caterpillar.
The Caterpillar Assembly Pre-Apprenticeship is a potential pathway into the Caterpillar Apprenticeship, which is a new post-high school program at the Caterpillar Clayton facility.
*Selected students earn 2 CTE Apprenticeship credits during their senior year
*All requirements for the Bioworks Pre-Apprenticeship credit are completed within the Biowork class via JCC instruction

What is the Biowork Pre-Apprenticeship?
BioWork is a program to assist emerging youth in their efforts to prepare for a career in biotechnology. JCC's BioWork course is a 136-hour, non-credit certificate course (Continuing Education) that can lead to an entry-level position as a process technician.
Successful completion of the course in high school will earn the student:
A BioWork Certificate (This certificate allows for entry-level employment in a biotechnology career, equals 1 year of work experience with local Johnston County biopharmaceutical companies, and transfers as two courses (BPM110 Bioprocess Practices & PTC110 Industrial Environment) in related biotechnology degree programs at JCC.)
One (1) high school credit for CTE Pre-Apprenticeship MANU (BioWork)
The opportunity to apply for related apprenticeships during your senior year
Participant Criteria:
Must be a high school junior or senior during the 2024-25 school year
Must be 18 upon graduation to apply for any related apprenticeship opportunities
Must attend high school in Johnston County Public Schools
Must have a 2.8 GPA or a principal recommendation letter
Fees and Tuition:
Students will not be charged CAPS fees from JCC since the classes are being held at the high schools
Tuition and books covered under CCP guidelines
How to Apply:
Monitor the JCC CCP website at bit.ly/CCPGENERALINFO for the application window (no exceptions).
Students must complete and submit the following items online:
CFNC JCC Application - choose Biowork Workforce Pathway.
CCP Student Eligibility Form
Memorandum of Understanding (includes student and parent signature)
Transcript or Letter of Recommendation (provided by JCPS)
*Links will be shared for 1, 2, 3 above once items have been finalized.
Once a student submits a completed CCP application packet, it will be reviewed to determine if the student meets the eligibility requirements.
If a student meets all the eligibility requirements to participate in the Workforce Pathway they must then complete a JCC CE Registration Form.
