Anger Management

Red Flags

Red flags warn our body that we may be facing a problem or feeling strong emotions. Examples of red flags are: pounding heart, butterflies in stomach, face on fire, tight fists, fast breathing, clenched jaw, etc. By understanding the red flags in our body, we can better prevent problems and calm our bodies down.

All emotions are okay; all behaviors are not.

We teach our brain and body to work together by using deep breaths, counting, and positive self-talk.

We teach students information about their brain to help them understand how strong emotions can take over our body.

Students learn that the amygdala or Lizard Brain processes our emotions. Students begin to understand that the amygdala can only make 3 choices, flight, fight, and freeze, which are rarely helpful at school.

Instead, students learn the power of the prefrontal cortex or Wizard Brain. The prefrontal cortex always us to stop and think and make appropriate choices for safe learning and successful interactions with others.
